Latest news is that the death toll is currently five. What I don't understand is why tourists would want to put themselves in danger in the first place visiting a volcano ???
Very seldom do volcanoes erupt without some form of warning. If this volcano was being monitored properly, they should have noticed that the lava chamber underneath the volcano was beginning to fill up, there would have also been a number of earth tremors or quakes to also give some indication of its instability. Apart from the volcano itself, what else is there on this island to interest tourists ??? I would never get that near to a volcano (extinct or otherwise).
Apparently there were several warnings about the imminent eruption - so why were they still allowing tourists to go there?
Maybe the tourists were not obeying warning? Purely speculating. The guy I'm staying with said it erupts quite often? I gotta say I'm a bit on Vlad's thinking here. Not sure I need to see a volcano badly enough to take that risk.
