Laddered??? Varnish??? You guys sure talk funny ...over here we would say that our tights have a run in them and nail polish. I actually love hearing the differences in the English language, its fun!
I think laddered sounds more logical, because the damaged part often looks like a ladder. And to me, polishing something means to buff it until it shines, whereas to varnish something is to coat it with a substance... so nail varnish seems to make more sense too.
