I agree mathematics is fundamentally important to a modern technological society,
rational critical thinking stems from the principles of logic,
but I don't think you need to be a mathematician to think rationally.

 

Being a logician is what mckenna suggests.
Being able to construct an axiomatic reason stream.
It is kind of like math as you weed out the inconsistencies in a statements premises.
