It shouldn't get infect as long as you take a hot shower every day, and every other day clean it with a NON Iodonized sea salt, and DONOT touch it. You don't need hydrogen peroxide, that'll make it scar more, you also do not need rubbing alcohol that'll induce bleeding. just water and sea salt.

they use a curved needle and start in the usual labret area....then the needle goes upwards into your bottom lip...basically the bar runs through the lip upwards./

Can you still move and bend your bottom lip?

I actually have two questions. I am DYING to get a vertical labret, but my job requires no facial piercings. I have to change my nose stud into a clear one every time I work. I've wanted this done for almost 3 years, but I was curious on how it would scar my lip if I took it out. Also, does clear balls hide the piercing enough?

Well, if your going to pierce it and change it you might be flirting with an infection. But if you must.... change the piercing after the swelling goes down and keep the clear stuff until it heals and pray that nothings wacky happens. But It's going to be tough.

well, the scar is barely noticeable, so i wouldn't worry about that.
the retainers you get for the vertical labret are curved barbels, and they're a bit more noticeable than any other piercing retainer, but still, hard to see. but as moondoggie says, gotta be careful when changing it in the early stages. if you do go through with it, i would at leats wait til the swelling goes down, and make sure everything's sanitized, and keep washing. also, if you're planning on changing between the retainer for work and the regular barbel for outside during the healing stages, don't. pick one to wear until it heals, then go ahead and start inter-changing them.

Thanks for the advice. I've been dying to get this piercing, but my mother is against piercings and my job doesn't allow them. I don't know why I didn't think about the piercing looking like a eye brow barbel.

I was also wondering if there was a lot of pain to get it done? I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to pain but I've had my tongue done when I was 14 and that didn't hurt at all, but when I turned 18 and got my nose pierced that hurt SO much. Haha.

it's really not too bad. i mean, it is a needle going through your lip, but it's for like...a millisecond. if you really want it, it shouldn't be that big of an issue. don't sweat it.

If you could handle getting your nose done you can definitely handle getting your vert. labret. I love mine ^_^

That looks really cool, but horribly painful! Glad to hear it didn't hurt too bad!
