Oddly enough, I don't really miss any meats. I guess my diet is rich enough as it is, and I just don't really desire to eat anything other than I'm eating. It's actually a pretty good, healthy diet.

Yea, I guess bacon tastes good, but it's one of the most unhealthy things that humans can eat. Loaded with fat and cholesterol, and preserved with nitrites that cause stomach cancer. On top of that, if you don't cook it well, you can get trichinosis from it, which isn't a very pleasant thing to have. We're all better off not eating those kinds of foods anyway.

oh, how true you are. I usually work Sunday brunches, and the smell of bacon and coffee first thing in the morning is where I loose all control.

Not that this will matter to most people on this thread, but trichinosis is pretty much eradicated. you could get a pork chop cooked at med rare.

If I may pose a question myself to anyone who wishes to answer:
What encouraged your decision to become vegetarian?? was it religious, health factor, economic/environmental, etc???

I've been a vegetarian for some months now, but I still eat fish.
The hardest thing for me is to know what to eat. I lack imagination when it comes to food. So, mostly I get stuck with beans or sallad...

Seven years or so. At this point I can't believe I actually ate meat. It seems like such a strange, disturbing concept now.

Yakima; no you're bloody well not a vegetarian
Vegetarian = no meat or fish
Pescatarian = fish but no meat
Ugh how fricking hard is that for people to understand?
I have no problem with people being pescatarian; my problem is when they claim to be vegetarian. So I [as a 'true' vegetarian] have to explain for the millionth fucking time that no I don't eat fish.

Why is fish eating seen as so much more acceptable anyway? The fish still get killed [they do have nervous systems and all], the fishing industry destroys the enviroment, you still get health scares about fish (mercury and such). So same diffrence right?
Seriously I've been pondering this for years and still don't have an answer. As it was fish was the first thing I gave up because of my goldfish.

    Anyway back on topic ...
Indeed I am a vegetarian, have been since June '03 and see no need to change that. It was for philosophical reasons; originally animal rights, but it's gone beyond that.
I was a bit concerned about bacon, as so many people fall of the wagon over it, but then I did smell it being fried and it was just so repulse.

Well as for the fish vs. other meat thing, I think it just has to do with the fact alot of people see being a vegetarian as not eating meat, and everyone through out their life always uses the term meat to normally just refer to steak, ham, bacon, ect., even though eating fish is eating meat, it just comes from sea animals rather then land ones.

I use to be a 'real' vegetarian. I started eating seafood b/c I could never find a logical and convincing reason not to.... and yes I did look. I have a thing where I need to be able to explain my beliefs and not just giggle and say I don't eat anything with a face, it has to make sense to me. I don't buy the it's still an animal b/c I see life as life and the life of a carrot is still a life that shouldn't be considered any less than anything else, we're all the same life force!! The only half good reason I could find was pollution.
But I mean thats more of an industry concern than moral.

I've felt myself grow apart from vegetarianism lately not b/c of my choice to eat seafood but b/c of the HUGE exclusion by 'real' vegetarians themselves against people who choose to do so. I do more for animal rights than a fair share of vegetarians (if not most vegetarians) so I guess the blunt label of just 'omnivore' like any steak and potatoes man pisses me off.

So right now I believe vegetarianism is great for your body and soul, but I'm kinda annoyed at many veggies for being more judgemental than educational.

Definitely look into it but keep an open mind. Even those that mean good may be off their rocking chairs and just trying to preach a pretty story.

haha I should of finished reading the posts before I responded. Over fishing is sad but to me, and well I orginally turned veggie for holistic health reasons and not so much animal rights, it does nothing to explain how it is bad for my body or soul. p.s. I guess minus the sad news that the oceans or getting plundered. but that can also be said to be the result of overpopulation. If their were fewer people and enough ocean life to sustain us would it be wrong?

Well, why I eat fish is because I thought it was a bit hard to quit eating all meat just like that. That's why I still eat fish, but not every day.
Soon I will quit eating fish aswell.
Btw, I didn't know there was something called pescatarian - only fish-vegetarian. But now I know.

So, I am soooo sorry everyone. I'm not a vegetarian. I'm a pescatarian...

I can't remember exactly when I became a veggie but I think it's about 13 years. I've eaten meat accidently once in that time (Special Fried rice from the take-away). I still eat seafood and freshwater fish and I'm not too worried about food that has been cooked near meat or in the same oil as meat (i.e fish, fishcakes that that have deep fried with the sausages at the Fish 'n Chip shop. Sometimes I miss being able to eat cold, cooked sausages or chicken nuggets but have never given in to temptation. It's against my principles. I let my children eat meat but I never buy fresh cuts of meat that I would have to handle, they're too expensive anyway.
