utopia is a word i don't much like or use often, because people use it as an excuse, to say we can't ever, create a world that doesn't depend on anyone screwing over anyone else. which is nonsense, but people want to pretend that we can't, to make excuses for their own doing so. and that's the only reason we don't have such a world by default.
utopia isn't that hard. you just need to lower the birthrate and stop worshiping the automobile. of course you also need to stop hating logic, consideration, honesty and imagination.
the future will continue to belong to science, (as long as there remains sapience to engage in it) but not, after the ecopoclypse has come and gone and run its course, to cities nor automobiles. so a future, once again owned by nature and wilderness, but not without advanced and continuing to advance science and technology. just not powered by the massive extraction of fossil fuels, when there just isn't any longer a population in sufficient numbers, to take an interests, nor be capable of being coerced into taking an interest, to extracting them on our familiarly massive scale. when you don't have enough people to extract coal or oil or uranium, then wind and sun and falling water is what you have, (and with the right kind of storage technologies, they can and will do the entire job) so either we save ourselves the pain, which we can, or we end up in the same place because of it, while running the risk of not not ending up any place at all. and what could possibly reduce population to such a degree? famine and disease, and that's 'the end game' of disrespecting the interdependence of life and environment. not half as entertaining as any war, but multiple times as deadly.
