The thing is some of these kids never actually get the 20,000 for the coffin because of some of the clauses and loopholes. Read the fine print..oh I forgot, scraping the bottom of the barrel means we get some people who can not interpret to well or even comprehend what they are reading...or don't even have the common sense to even look in the first place. They just want that 20,000 so they can blow some bastads up and watch TV on their flatscreen HD TV afterwards. They don't have enough time to read the fine print. right.
someone in my AP Government class joined the national guard at age 17, and he's still in high school. He actually did it for no other reason than the $20,000(i thought he said ten but w/e) signing bonus. But he did get his money. I'm not going to spew political rants because he isn't as stupid or blind as you people seem to think. Just thought I'd share.
I hope he lives to spend it. And it also demonstrates the altruistic motives of our brave young warriors.
He couldn't possibly have got the "money" yet because it isn't all given up front. You have to "earn" it, and there are many, many loopholes for them to deny payment. They will get some upfront money, but the rest comes after each full year of service. Sorta like benchmarks they must meet...
And, you have to make an initial deposit of 1,200 straight up. if you quit, you never see the deposit and you have to give back all the money you earned. You have to FINISH to keep the money Like Skip said, many loopholes which makes quitting a huge possibility. 1 and 10 get their money. The other 9 lose out.
Well, he most certainly did get SOME of his money. At least a couple of thousand. I am not about to ask if he got payed in full. To be honest I don't really know the guy that well. (PS)-I'm pretty sure he joined because his dad got killed in a car accident so he is helping out his family financially.
Ask the Red Bulls about the GI bill, one day under 730 days of active duty and those national guard heros have been denied their benefits because even though they served a record number of months on deployment, they were one day short of qualifying for their GI benefits. 729 http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=8802 Don't think it was intentional? I have no doubt some accountant pulled this off in order to balance their budget. Only Blackwater get's their money up front and a hell of a lot more than our military and faces no rules, regulations or liability.
