I was neutral about Wikileaks until I saw the video showing the innocent and unarmed men getting shot by American troops. And the humor the same troops took in taking innocent lives? Excuse me? I am not trained in viewing the videos provided, but even I can tell when someone is carrying a gun or not. Considering that and how hushed up the military was about the Mahmudiyah killings, along with the AP murders, and then the government talks about wanting transparency.... while Julian's ideologies and mine may not match.... sometimes stuff like politics really doesn't matter if both of you want to make things right.
For a couple reasons, IIRC. First some white supremacists go off of religious freedom. And then some go off of political campaign ideologies. I do not recall when or where, but there was a lawsuit and some big corp lost to the klan. It was over something quite similar. Wikileaks is borderline between freedom of speech and espionage. A fine line in their case, one I am not confident they will fair well in because freedom of speech, American style (as Wikileaks proposes their actions to be) only apply within the US. Ideally freedom of speech should be universal. But it's not. Doing in other countries, what is ok in America, can get you imprisoned or even killed.
In the interview, he points out a lot of the facts that we have been discussing concerning elected official's calling for his execution. It will be interesting to see what happens over this, if anything. http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/12/22/wikileaks.assange/index.html?hpt=T2
I see. So I have a Canadian telling me that I may want to check my facts about what you can do in America that is not always acceptable in other countries. Come to Colorado. Get yourself a medicinal marijuana license and then, with enough medicinal pot to last your expected stay, go to Saudi. Your license won't means squat and at worst you get beheaded. Best *might be* a few years in a Saudi prison and the arabs are not known for pleasant conditions there. Freedom of speech can get you shot in Venezuela and has been known to happen in Ecuador. And Vietnam. And in China freedom of speech gets you a few years in prison.
Yeah, and in Canada, we have much more freedom of both speech and person then you do in the states. The US is not the only country in the world where free speech is protected. Of course, now that you have decided to act like an ass about it, I have no problems pointing out how this is another case of an american thinking they are some bastion of freedom, when in truth, the citizens of the US have less real freedoms then MANY other countries.
Could be. Congrats. I never said it was. Exactly. Anyone that disagrees with you is an ass. I never said that America is ever "some bastion of freedom". I only used it as reference. I know how little freedom we have when compared to other countries, but I wasn't talking about that.
You are an ass, because when it was suggested you check your facts, your response was to attack. Here, go read this page, and then if you feel that you still have anything you want to say regarding freedom of speech, make a new thread about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech
Freedom of expression/speech therefore is LIMITED to NOT impinging the honor or reputation of others unless they are public figures. That means you CANNOT ATTACK or INSULT another and claim it as Freedom of Speech. So calling someone an ASS is a personal attack, and acts to LIMIT THEIR FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Got it?
UPDATE 12/23: Assange Labels Bradley Manning a Political Prisoner http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/...dley-manning-political-prisoner_n_800499.html
Don't sweat it, Skip, Ole Tom's hatred for everything American may be expressed ad nauseum, but it's well known here and tolerated by most. He's really a big pussy cat who isn't quite retired despite his profile declaration.
As was his response to which him being called an ass was a direct response Skip. I've said this before and I will continue to say it. If you wish to take issue with me responding in kind, take issue with what I was responding to as well.
Besides, we need ole' Toms negativity here to counter all the "feel good" vibes coming out of the Stoner's Lounge
I find it equally disturbing that as a whole, the population isn't questioning this... and I only see this little ethical inconsistency here on these forums. This basically says it- except that the pertinent concern is also with corporations- to which the KKK doesn't pose a threat either. If there is a third party financing entity that doesn't enforce political standards through denial of service tactics I would suggest not only for Wikileaks to use them, but any conscientious consumer make their voices heard by de-activating Visa and Mastercard accounts and use it... any suggestions? Funny thing is that we've all played a part in helping centralize banking and effectively ceding bully pulpit status to financial giants who in turn use that unwarranted power to restrict freedom of speech and freedom of information. The criminals are exerting their power to cover their tracks and acting to stifle the availability of real information. To me, this just underscores the urgency to keep maintain the flow of real information..
Maybe I missed it but they key point is that Logan didn't call you an ass in expressing his differences with you Tom.
Just because some of you choose to ignore the passive agressive bullshit that is in this post; Doesn't mean everyone will. What does me being canadian have to do with the subject? I find that as insulting as other people MAY consider being called an ass, and more insulting then I consider being called an ass... Beyond that, since that time, I have had two more direct attacks made on me, that not a word has been said about..
I simply think there are more effective ways to respond to the indirect slurs than resorting to name calling and complaining about presumed unfair moderation... which is a new facet that YOU have brought into the discussion- making it increasingly difficult for me to protect your ability to contribute here. The subject is supposed to be about how the establishment is using smear tactics and possibly malicious prosecution to achieve what is arguably their real purpose- to deny people access to information that they have a right to. Let's try to keep that the topic of posts and refrain from personal references One's nationality doesn't automatically affect their qualifications to comment on freedom of speech so that was an unnecessary bit of indirect slur and considering the nature of who is contributing here- arguably a deliberate attempt to bait specific individuals into breaking rules so I must respectfully request that people refrain from such topical diversions. Thank you and peace.
