Smoke from industrial and chemical waste, mercury, leaded gasoline, motor vehicle emissions, steel and zinc smelters that were causing all sorts of respiratory and cardiovascular problems
Back in the 60s, I was a student at the U of Minnesota and as we drove towards the Twin Cities one could see the brown pollution pall from about 40 miles out. This was in the well ventilated Midwest and common to other large cities in the region.
