United States Federal Government Shut-Down

Yeah, so far vouchers will continue to be issued, and will continue to be valid for the time being. So it sounds like they are operating thru local health depts,even though the Federal offices are closed

'WIC' ( Women, Infants, and Children) supplies vouchers for nutritious food and nutritional education to eligible pregnant women and new mothers. 20,000 women are enrolled in any given month in any given region

The feds arent providing money to pay the administrative costs of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.

However, the federal program is administered by state employees, through local health departments and those employees will continue to working through the shutdown.

Their office will not be receiving any more funding for the time being so officials are encouraging WIC clients to call their local health department next week about possible program changes if the federal government shutdown continues.
This is a program that effects many low income women and children- -this really needs to remain operational
Charitable groups are already filling the void. A Facebook group called "The People's WIC - was launched hours after WIC offices closed, matching up families in need with those able to donate formula and other food.

It's not a coincidence. Government shutdowns like this Happen whencongress cannot agree on a budget by Oct. 1, which is the beginning of the fiscal year. Anyone predicting a shutdown would have known the exact day it would start on. With the political climate like it is today, it's not surprising and doesnt take a rocket appliance to predict a shutdown.

 

If we're not paying Federal workers doesn't that logically mean money is not spent. I thought one led to the other. Government is good for national security and law making, and general care for the sick and elderly and infrastructure. But there's no denying there are a lot of non essential departments, and redundant jobs.

AT this point the parks have been reopened.

that's what my link was. can't find where the federal gov't is opening any parks on 'their own'. but one community raised the money themselves to keep one open.

Nothing to know about a government limitation on borrowing from the bank. Just is; government must pay for itself as much as other pay into It.

Ok, fine. So they shut down the government. But I still fail to see the logic of shutting down programs that, at worst, are self-sustaining. IOW they take care of themselves without tax dollars. When they shut down the self-sustaining programs, they are doing far more damage than NOT shutting the government down would do. You can't abandon ship just because it sprung a few leaks. And...they did. It's stupid.
I have friends that work in those areas that are self-subsisting. And to see my friends, whom I know for a fact work their asses off hard (and I've worked along side them as well) get laid off out of stupidity....

BTW, to the member that neg rep'd me calling me a sexist...Michelle's obligation is to her husband. Nothing else SHOULD come first. Nothing sexist about it. If she doesn't like it then I suppose she should bail out ASAP.

I never said any of it was right. It's totally wrong and it should never have happened. But it did and now it's to the point our leaders are using it and us as tools, as weapons, in this spat over Obamacare. I'm right now neutral about Obamacare, so I can't say it's good or bad.

There's not much in government that is truly self-sustaining financially, but that has nothing to do with the law. Without congressional authorization that is being withheld, it's illegal to pay nonessential government workers, regardless of the financial consequences. The NPS, for example, can legally pay their security people to prevent looting, but not the folks who empty the trash cans and clean bathrooms for public use. When you pay $5 to go in a national park, that money belongs to Uncle Sam. The NPS can't decide on its own to use it for salaries or whatever. It can't legally manage its own money, like a business.

 

It's a moral responsibility. Just as in chess, the Queen is supposed to protect the King. Just the way it is.

I don't care to cover anything nor do I care if anyone "made me".

It's now 6 months in jail and $5,000 fine to use the parks & services the government has laid off. I don't care what you think of it Gongshaman. It's not acceptable. Yes if they could find programs that are truly non-essential, shut them down instead. You know, stuff like DEA, ICE & TSA. Those three are more reputed for wasting money and abusing both their authority and the Constitutional rights of Americans (technically speaking, Constitutional rights cover EVERYONE in the US, no matter if they are citizens or not).
