United States Federal Government Shut-Down

That story sounds like serious miscommunication and lack of coordination to me. I don't know. An operation that big is always going to have problems. I do know that a lot of houses have been saved this year, out west.

I wouldn't worry about it, if I were you. Everybody reads and forms their own conclusions. I'm not still thinking about posts from this morning.

That would mean no DC-10 tankers or anything like that. And on a windy day, a fire at your neighbor's house increases the chances of your house catching fire, so we really can't just do our own thing and not impact other people. Fires don't know what a property line is. Can you imagine selective firefighting in a city where townhouses are jammed up together?

That should be in somebody's sig line.

The only place I've seen where that is really stupid is at the World War II Memorial. Now that the water fountain pump has been turned off, it takes no more people or money to let people in during the daytime than it does to keep them out. I can't think of any other places where that would be true, except maybe the Martin Luther King Memorial. It's also simple and low-maintenance.

Since so many elderly WWII vets go up there every day, and they are dying off at such a rapid pace, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody works out a deal to re-open that one memorial with volunteers keeping an eye on things.

that's exactly the intended subtext. that's an example of why i like your posts, you think beyond the inflammatory headlines.

here's the flaw in the pure rabid-libertarian stance some people take. sorry to use another trigger word but we (most) live in a society. sorry, that's socialism.
so ok, ya. don't protect yourself by subscribing to fire fighting insurance, or, don't pay taxes to support "the public option".

but if you're going to be a libertarian, don't tread on me either. in the standard model of the libertarian utopia, i'd be forced to build a concrete barrier for you to stare at because your hippy-back-to-nature-pig-farm-trailer-park is a fire hazard and a threat to my well being and happiness.

that's the side of "we don't need no dang gub-ment tellin us what to do" argument that people don't often want to address.

Politicians care when a cut affects them personally, such as delaying their flights home for vacation.

    http://articles.latimes.com/2013/apr/26/nation/la-na-flight-delays-20130427

"The speedy resolution came after airlines and businesses warned of lost earnings, and travelers — including lawmakers leaving the capital for a weeklong recess — complained about the waits."

"Lawmakers are among the nation's most frequent fliers, and Carney suggested the fact that the measure flew through Congress might have something to do with "members of Congress who need flights home.""

The shutdown should only shutdown the lawmaking bodies of government. If spending is an issue, cut politician's salaries.

Something i cant figure out is, why are national parks closed? Dont those make money? And how is obama's presidential golf course still open?

There is no such thing as a presidential golf course and Obama has not played anywhere since the shutdown started.

    :2thumbsup:

Plus...it is not only the "lawmaking" parts of government shut down. That has nothing to do with it. It's essential vs. non-essential federal government- pretty simple.

Wow , Sun , you really carry the torch for oby. Before you decide to totally drink his bathwater ; why don't you wait and see long term ,how his keynesian tactics go over. Things are already starting to sour as a result of obyscare. I'm personally gleening that the jihadist in chief is suffering from stress disorders.

Perhaps this belongs in "Bare it" or another naturist thread. Are Florida's nude beaches included in the shut down?

I agree, it shows how one political party can attempt to use blackmail to override an existing law that they don't like, and that has been upheld by the Supreme Court In addition, they are using the blackmail of the economy against a compromise healthcare program based on a Republican model.
Yes, the Democrats are finally showing some backbone.

So, you think it would be much better to default on our debts thus ruining our standing in the world market, etc.? Over a Constitutional Republican based healthcare compromise plan?

    Very true.

National parks bring in tourist revenue to the areas they are located, rural areas no less. Most national parks are located far far away from significant populations. And if the scenic beauty of those parks weren't there, it's likely nobody would ever visit those locations.

Good money for local businesses, but park entrance fees collected directly by the government are quite low.

To the best of my knowledge those programs have not been shut down.

What infuriates me is how the BLM, USFS, USFWS & NPS are furloughed when, if anything, they are the money making programs. Even if not making boocoo bucks, they are at least self-sustaining.

OTOH WHY does Obama need two executive chefs to cook for him? Doesn't his wife know how to cook? How hard is it to make his own Ramen Noodles? How special does his cheeseburgers and fries have to be? Ever here of Macaroni & Cheese?

I think WIC gets funding from the states, but it is coordinated on the federal level. Not clear what will happen if the shutdown continues.

Foodstamps has funding for now, but will run out in a few weeks.

WIC is state, IIRC. Foodstamps is US Dept. Agriculture.
No telling what's gonna come to an end. Though some of the Pee Party freaks I know were professing this very scenario was going to come about, though a month or two early. And the way they said it was going to happen is once the public funding ran out, wait a couple weeks and IF the Congress & Senate didn't initiate the impeachment & arrest proceedings, the "round-up" was to begin. Taking people to the alleged concentration camps.

Personally I think it's bullshit. But let's be realistic here- a year ago could anyone say the government was going to shutdown, and be accurate within a month or two? So all things considered, either the Pee Party freaks know what the hell's going on or this is one of the weirdest coincidences I have ever encountered.

And I don't believe in coincidences.
    Gets ya to wonder.

Why? Michelle doesn't know how to cook? What the hell is she there for?
