Strangely enough I am quite good with computer programming languages, but human languages evade me. I struggled for years to even learn french and must admit I know very little of that - so a language like welsh with very different sounds than in a language like french or english and a spelling system that is much less phonetic was going to stand no chance of me picking it up. By the time I left I could say the odd sentence and say the names of towns properly I could read a word and know how to say it but not necessarily what it meant. I think the reason I got accepted so quickly was because I took the time to explain to people nicely that although I felt it would be easy to dismiss me as being an outsider and worst of all an English person, it didnt stop me from loving what culture I had already seen of theirs and they found that appealing. eventually I got taken places and shown things that were truly amazing - met fantastic artists and musicians and went to fabulous parties, and then threw a few parties myself- great stuff. I really did make some interesting friends - long time ago now though. I think the people up there realised that I was actually interested and more to the point - that I wanted to add to it myself and give something back so I helped out at raves and supported local events etc and took an interest in what people were doing. I learned what being Welsh meant and eventually they forgot I was English (most of em anyway) I know what you mean about the north south thing - ha I always found that strange that they consider Cardiff and surrounding areas to be England! I must admit that another of my reasons they accepted me - I believe was that I knew how to remain politically in tune with their thinking whilst retaining the right to my own viewpoint. I really enjoyed the North Wales experience. I love the whole of Wales but The north is something really special. Damn I gotta get back there and have a look round again. Whereabouts are you L.A Matthews?
"Cau dy geg". It means "Shut your mouth", or more informally "Cau dy pen", which literally means "Shut your head".
I'm from the South. In the Rhymni Vallies. They only consider us part of England, because they're stupid and primative...They drink sheep's blood and sacrifice small children in the North, ya know...Crazy bastards up there...They all live in mountains and caves.
