As Trump shouts about the press being the enemy of the people, two more journalist give their ultimate in the fight for truth.

Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova was found raped, beaten, and smothered in a park in Ruse.
She had been covering corruption involving EU funds.
She's the third journalist to be murdered in the EU this month.

Meanwhile Jamal Khashoggi has disappeared in Turkey after walking into the Saudi Arabian consulate. Video shows him entering and never leaving. A 15 person team flew in from Saudi Arabia the day he disappeared and videos show black vans appearing at the consulate after Khashoggi entered
Khashoggi resided in Washington and was a columnist for the Washington Post and editor-in-chief of Al Arab News Channel.
He fled Saudi Arabia in 2017.

Marinova's story sickened and frightened me.

  3. I agree.
An arrest has been made in Marinova's case. And so far Bulgarian authorities and people close to Marinova say it was random and not connected to her work. One should doubt this, of course, considering press freedom in Bulgaria, as well as numerous other issues, including those Marinova tackled. However, there is a possibility it really was random, no matter how tiny or believable that possibility is.
On the other hand, the whole concept of walking into a consulate, and being murdered ....makes your blood freeze.
I'm not really trying to compare, both stories are terrifying.
But while one could potentially be a random murder, or attributed to different perpetrators, the other one is connected to an official state, and that is just plain scary.

That being said, I don't believe her murder was random.

The brutality with which she was raped or murdered suggests it wasn't random. It may not have been revenge for reporting on EU corruption, but I don't believe it was random. Something that sick and twisted has got to be personal or a message.

This is--what?--the 4th or 5th time this has happened since that reporter was beheaded in a submarine? This is all so horrific. The people still willing to investigate and report on this are all much more brave than I.

UN says Trump will bear ‘heavy responsibility’ for safety of journalists around world after media attacks ~ Aug. 20, 2018.
"Ennemi du peuple," ~ France's reign of terror.
    "vrag naroda," ~ Vladimir Lenin
"enemies of the people," ~ Mao Zedong
"enemies of the people," ~ the Nazi tabloid Der Stürmer
"enemies of the people" ~ Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton

The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @abc, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People! ~ February 17, 2017, President Donald Trump.

The guy calling the Boston Globe? He actually used the same words. That's clearly Trump's influence.

But what is going on in Europe? To say Trump has a heavy responsibility? I'm not defending Trump in way, shape, or form, but doesn't blaming Trump just shift focus away from the sick, psychotic killers keeping the EU's dirty secrets?

I don't care what the UN says...Trump isn't going to bear anything. He is a stupid bully with all of his ignorant tweeting while his bully boy (and girl?) lawyers seem to consistently make sure he never suffers or pays for anything.

I truly wish this ^^^ wasn't so....but that seems to be the reality we live in.

I tear up a little bit thinking about what a grim fate they both had.

Releasing the dark psyche of strongmen everywhere, who always have willing goons to do the wet work. Neither trump nor his devoted suck-asses care about any of that. Winning is all, by hook or by crook. We have been quite lucky here--but---?????

Yeah while I find Trump's attacks on the press alarming, it is a bit of a stretch to pin this on him. Bulgaria is rated the lowest out of all EU members for press freedom and Saudi Arabia is pretty well known for their human rights violations

Of course here we don't fool around with pesky journalists--we go directly at a president , his brother and civil rights leaders--if they are effective.

    Musta' been those lefties.

Precisely! Only if they are effective is of prime importance imo.

#45 doesn't even fool with reporters he "doesn't like". Am I remembering correctly that he wouldn't even let some reporters in to a few of his press conferences, and others he would make fun of them. WHO can forget him making fun of the disabled journalist???

However, none of this has to do with this thread...but I'll be honest...I don't understand why any journalist that values their life at all would want to put themselves in the positions these people put themselves in. Being murdered in a consulate is horrific...but seeing as this happened in Turkey, unfortunately it is not surprising to me.

It is not a secret that outside of the US, you really and truly can't just report on what you want...no matter how true it is...nor how much "the world" should know.

The Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is a close friend of Jared Kushner, Trump's son in law.
The Crown Prince is believed to be the one who ordered the hit on Khashoggi. Kushner and the Crown Prince have had private phone conversations off the grid using WhatsApp.

Last October Kushner traveled to Saudi Arabia and had private talks with The Crown Prince.
Following all this Trump took to Twitter to support the crackdown. Millions of dollars were confiscated by the Saudis and in December Maj. Gen. Ali al-Qahtani was found tortured to death in the Ritz. [/QUOTE]

Trump set up a huge arms deal to Saudi Arabia and it's believed they were led to conclusion by Trump, et al, that they were free to do what ever they want including imprisonment, torture, and killing of those they don'y like.

Turkey claims they have recordings of Khashoggi being tortured and killed.
One report is that the recordings were obtained from his Apple Watch, but that's probably a cover story being used in an attempt by the Turks to provide coverage for the fact that the Saudi consulate is bugged.

Meanwhile the world is waiting for Trump's response which so far has been minimal.
