Weak response from Putin, considering that this is essentially an act of war between NATO and the former Soviet Union. That tells me he's seen the radar images, and knows his guy was on the wrong side of the border. Mistakes happen when you fly too close to a line.

There needs to be better communication and coordination, since we're all on the same side against ISIS. Will Russian egos allow it?

I think we need co-ordinated action by the US, Russia, UK and France if IS are going to be quashed. I don't think it's only Russian egos that stand in the way - there are some big egos on the western side too.
We should bury the hatchet with Russia and focus on the speedy elimination of these murderers.

I can just picture the poor Russian pilots being warned in Turkish... then boom!

It seems like Turkey could afford the Russian pilots a little more leniency.

    What did I read?

They were still .06 mile inside Syrian airspace?

    That's splitting hairs.

Obama said today that all countries have a right to defend their airspace....Does that mean Iraq can shoot us down...or France?

I think Putin should be concerned that hundreds of thousands of Syrian and Iraqi immigrants could flee to Ukraine and help fight the Russians.

Putin doesn't exactly care about others' airspace. it has been pulling this shit since forever, not just with Turkey, but with the US, the EU....flying its planes close to the borders. the US and some EU states have been bombing Syria and ISIS too. somehow we never got into Turkish airspace.

and pilots will get a warning ahead of time, before they are close to violating another sovereign state's airspace, and/or not given permission to enter it. granted Turkey gave all such warnings, the pilots had time to change their trajectory, if they didn't....this is what you get.

those planes are capable of flying at above 1500 km/h. 1km from Turkish border might as well be in it for all intents and purposes. as a pilot himself Putin knows '1 km from the border' is not gonna fly. he's just using that for propaganda purposes. so that those who don't even have a rudimentary understanding of air travel will say 'but technically he wasn't in Turkey'. not even an argument.

Hi RJ, I think that the immigrants from Iraq and Syria are escaping the terror of ISIS. Most ISIS fighters are not from Iraq and Syria. They are well armed with American made weapons like the TOW used to shoot down the Russian helicopter. And they are well paid by several parties. They are well compensated by Turkey, the nation that buys most of the stolen oil. ISIS had a fleet of over a thousand tankers to carry the stolen oil from Syria and Iraq to Turkey. The Turks have been getting a very low price and have been able to make a bundle by selling it. Russia started targeting that fleet of oil tankers and Turkey got pissed. Since the shooting down of that SU 24 jet and the helicopter, Putin has ordered his military to open fire on any threat in that theater of operations. He has dispatched a destroyer to the coast of Syria, equiped with Cruise type missiles. The big issue now is that Turkey is a member of NATO. That means any war now would put all of the NATO countries, including the USA, in direct conflict with Russia. A few weeks ago I posted a thread about WWIII, because of what I read in global news about the developments in that region.

I can think of several countries who have not respected the air space of weaker nations, like say France when it occupied Syria, Lebanon, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morrocco. The USA has not invited from the government of Syria; but, it is in Syrian air space everyday, trying to help the rebels overthrow Assad. The UK has had no repect of the air space of Iraq. Israel has had no respect for Syrian or Iraqi air space. So some folks can see the picture from thier own side and have an opinion other than yours, or other western folks.

NBC news anchor Brian Williams said yesterday that we are in a world war.

A good point was made about the refugees leaving Syria and Iraq being mostly men of fighting age. Those are the ones that could go to Ukraine and fight the Ruskies....we could take the women and children.

When Israel bombs Iran, the shit hits the fan.

I don't like the sound of NATO vs. Russia. The word on the street is missiles are being sent to Russian fighters in Syria to use on Turkey if they intervene again. This is really bad.

what i don't understand here though -- before this whole blunder happened, NATO and Russia were both fighting ISIS in the region. and after Paris attacks, NATO and Russia were supposed to co-operate with each other on that. didn't they co-ordinate some basic matters like policies concerning fighting close to NATO borders with each other? this shouldn't even have been possible to happen with two parties that are supposed to work together on fighting a common enemy.

if Russia was given no special license to fight in the NATO border zone, then it stands that it was a clear violation on Russia's side.
