TSMC to Build Specialty Fab in Japan to Address Local Demand The Japanese and Chinese have a long history, and are not known for working or playing nice together, and this latest move by Taiwan TSMC and Japan is a strategic long term one. Note the chip nodes they are spending seven billion dollars to produce, are what was already in common use a decade or more ago. Size does matter, but they will be making experimental chips and small production chips for specialty uses, and by using a larger node they can speed up production. Larger nodes are also better for things like MEMs or electrical mechanical devices, and for optics. Japan only wishes they had China's resources, while China only wishes they had Japan's experience. Things could get weird, and this whole situation is not good for world peace and stability.
