    You are absolutely correct.
The decay mainly took place between the mid 70s and mid 90s when we had the benefits of cheap imports and before our own economy collapsed, during which time, we has so much money that house prices spiraled. Our London home that was worth £50,000 in 1975, has just been valued at 2 million. It is a small terraced house.

Back in that period, so many workers helped destroy their own future by going on strike because of things as stupid as the canteen running out of tea bags.

If western governments had offset the problem by applying import taxes, we would all be a lot better off today and our children would be able to afford a property.
Our daughter is a London police officer and her partner is a doctor. The maximum mortgage that they can obtain is about 35% of the cost of a house in London. They are currently renting a small flat for £1,500 per month.... Surprise Surprise.... The owners of the property are Chinese.

2 million pounds in London. Traffic wardens included.

If they wanted to murder them, they wouldn't be telling them to get guns.

I think the threat is, if they Impeach Trump, they will burn down cities like some on the left do when things don't go their way. To me it says Trump supporters would take to streets and they'd do well to protect their property. I would think the Trump supporters would try and burn down any prominent left wing targets.

If I were going to murder, I'd not be telling them to take up arms. Why make it more difficult to do so.

Well if you read some of my other posts yeah if I really wanted to I am sure I could have your IP put into a database. What they do with it I don't know. But if I assume my friends tell the truth you could be a member of the targeted community really quick. Google that.

I would never do that however. And my people are not important enough to have their friends personal vendettas a priority. But if happened it would go beyond your precocious guns into true madness. No one would believe you and that is the idea.

Beyond my precocious guns? You don't even know what precocious means. Nevertheless, I'm sure everyone believes you when you say that you know a guy who could have me put me on a list; after all, you've said it is so. The thing is, when we're young, we like for everyone to believe that we're more than we really are. And sometimes that need will manifest as a claim that we know a guy in a high place who will do our bidding.

Anyway, you haven't contacted the FBI to report a murderous threat made by the creator of that sign. That's all I asked. And your answer is no.

What cities were burned down by "some on the left"? lol. The British who burned D.C. in 1812 were hardly liberals, neither Mrs. O'Leary nor her cow who started the 1871 Chicago fire were known to be liberals either, and the San Francisco fire of 1906 was caused by ruptured gas lines from an earthquake. Members of the Anarchist group Antifa members were arrested for a fire in Philadelphia that burned eleven homes--a serious incident, but hardly a city. Were they ever convicted? Some Antifa members have been unconstitutionally charged here and there for flag burning--no cities burned. Fires during Watts race riot in 1965 during the civil rights unrest of the sixties over half a century ago was confined to a section of a city, and is not well described as being an action of "the left". Likewise, the Da Vinci complex fire in LA in 2014 was started by a disturbed individual not known to be an ideologue, on cocaine and alcohol at the time, who was pissed about the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson. He seems to have chosen the target because it was vulnerable,--an unguarded fire hazard and would light up like a Christmas tree. Not really an action by "some on the left". Where was the arson outbreak after the impeachment of Bill Clinton?

One of the problems is that there are so many guns already, and "some on the right" have the idea the Second Amendment gives them the right to use them in political disputes. Armed groups in the "sovereign citizens" movement, the Posse Comitatus, and the Oath Keepers have been known to show up at progressive political rallies in Texas, at hot spots like Ferguson, at Rowan County during the controversy over Kim Davis' denial of marriage licenses to gays, and at mosques where they present an intimidating presence. "Perfectly legal exercise of their constitutional rights." But it's intimidation, everybody knows it, and it's dangerous to our democracy. Antifa seems to be the closest counterpart on the left--another group that needs to be dealt with by the law if they use violence on behalf of their political views. And if you have groups of any persuasion burning down anything they think is a target representing a wing, because they don't like a political development, that also is a serious blow to public order.

The sign itself is interesting--signed by the "deplorables' and perfectly illustrating what that phrase means: Folks who apparently believe that impeachment of a President would be grounds to attack people of who have political views they perceive to be those of the party doing the impeachment. Wow! That's an amazing view! Do the morons who posted the sign know that impeachment simply brings the charge(s) against the President, that it would take two-thirds of the Senate to remove him, that impeachment has only occurred twice and removal never in U.S. history, and that if it happens we get Mike Pence. And for this they're willing to threaten liberals. When the sign says "better get your guns" the implication of lethal violence is clear. What would happen next? Would we bow to the violence of an armed mob and rescind the impeachment? Would our military and security forces come to the defense of the Constitution? Would the country remain a democracy after this episode? What would be a "liberal target"? The Statue of Liberty? The Jefferson Memorial? Independence Hall? The only redeeming thing about the sign is that whoever put it up is probably some crank trying to stir shit. I wouldn't go defending it though, lest you be put in the same category.

Yeah, sounds crazy until you work out what 50,000 in 1975 is in todays money.

I bet most of that increase came in the last 10 to 15 years. 50,000 to 2 million over 43 years is still only 9% average per year compounding annually, but then you factor out inflation, which was crazier in the 80s and 90s than it is now, so 2-3% on average, factor out mortgage interest which was required for most owner occupiers which also got to crazy levels late 80s early 90s, so a probable 7 to 12 % on average depending where you are in the world ( i know its lower than that now, but we are talking average over the last 43 years.

9% - 2% - 7% = 0. In real terms, lucky if you have come out ahead more than somewhere between 0 to 4% a year for the last 43 years, which is only high interest savings account level, even though its worth $2 million now. Then of course there is also council, water rates and maintenance costs per year

What I am trying to get at, is two things:

    1. If instead in 1975 you had put 50,000 in your super and the same amount you spent on the house each year into your super, and somehow managed to live rent free somewhere, you'd have something more like 4 to 5 million pounds instead of 2 million

    2. As an investor, its only really worth it if the value of the property increases more than 10% a year, which has only really been the case the last 10 to 15 years. I dont see how that is going to be sustainable, which is why I and many others think its all just going to end up in a crash, and a mighty big one
Either the value of you house is going to keep increasing by more than 10% a year and will be worth 4 million pounds in 2028 or not, I really dont see it happening

Its happened in America and will happen again, its happening in Spain at the moment

We cant have economies too reliant on how well the banks are doing by how much mortgage interest they are making, it is sticking all your eggs in one basket

I'm not quite following. Property values in London have soared because London's economic growth as a commercial and financial capital have correspondingly increased the demand for living there. So you made out like a bandit in terms of the value of your property. Of course, to get your money out, you'd need to move somewhere else, where the demand is less intense. I'd recommend Oklahoma. You could build a palace here with that kind of dough! As for your daughter, she's facing the downside of this trend. She might not be able to afford a property in London. Would she consider a job somewhere else? The trick is to find a place where police officers and physicians are paid well (not Oklahoma), but properties are affordable. That would take some research, but I bet it's possible. I doubt that import taxes would solve the problem, because: (1) they'd increase the cost of goods for everybody; (2) when other countries retaliate, they'll reduce markets for British producers.

The problems all started in the mid 1970s when cheap imports of food and consumer items left people with piles of spare money. Everyone started buying property and a shortage led to spiraling inflation. THAT was the time when governments should have acted. Sadly for most of us today, it is too little. MUCH too late.

Your suggestion of mowing half way around the world is something that fills me with horror. We are all part of London, I have spent most of my life in the theater and although retired, I am constantly still involved. Jane is a ward councilor and loves her job working in the community, along with her position in the government. Christina loves her job in the police and works on projects to help the homeless as well as dealing with animal issues (she is a qualified vet). I can just imagine her reaction if she was offered a position in the US and they offered her a gun LMAO. Our son also plays in a heavy metal band. We have owned that house in the picture since it was built in 1887 (when it cost £125), It was where my father was born the same year. Jane has 12 brothers and sisters still alive, all with large families and grandchildren who spend a lot of time with us.
If the situation was in reverse, would you seriously pack your bags and move to London

I think they just like pushing your buttons. Then the gears in your head start turning, and your captivated mind starts churning out hypotheticals like an attack on the Statute of liberty, the Jefferson Memorial, or Independence Hall. They're probably getting off on watching you speculate about what your list of hypotheticals would do to democracy, and which side the military will fall on, and stuff like that. But you don't have to worry about these speculations of yours. You know that the FBI picks up on these kinds of things, and if they deem that sign to be a genuine threat to society, they'll stop those bastards in their tracks. And if they don't, then you can rest assured they didn't consider the makers of that sign to be any real kind of threat to liberals or democracy.

But little do they know I'll be getting off on them taking me seriously. Cuz like I said, the person who put it up is probably some crank (like certain posters on these threads I'll leave unmentioned).

Your response makes no sense. The creators of that sign do not, and will not, ever take you seriously. And if they did (which they don't), it certainly would not be for the reason that they are some crank (like certain posters on these threads who shall remain nameless).

Your response makes no sense. You are seriously and literally a comment made whimsically to a post about a "they" who are pushing my buttons, and an elaborate train of speculation about what I would do then.

Hmm, I've never thought of myself as a comment made whimsically to a post. :astonished:

    Seriously, rewrite that.

Anyway, you seem to be implying that you were being less than serious when you said:

"When the sign says "better get your guns" the implication of lethal violence is clear. What would happen next? Would we bow to the violence of an armed mob and rescind the impeachment? Would our military and security forces come to the defense of the Constitution? Would the country remain a democracy after this episode? What would be a "liberal target"? The Statue of Liberty? You come across as serious.

That would be the clear implication of the sign. I'm not worried about it, cuz I don't know who put up the sign, but suspect it is just some crank. Crank (Webster's) an annoyingly eccentric person; also : one who is overly enthusiastic about a particular subject or activity ; a bad-tempered person : grouch I think such people are best avoided, since they tend to be energy drains. End of conversation.

Well, if someone is overenthusiastic about pointlessly banning cosmetic features on guns, or banning guns outright, I don't see them as an energy drain, as it's relatively easy to put them in a corner and shut them up. But kudos to you for recognizing an energy drain you can do without. Better late than never, I always say.

Well, whoever it was they probably burned down their own city because of socialism.

Can't you see? If we could only get rid of socialism, we would all be living in paradise!
It's all so very simple, and yet nobody on the left seems to get it!

    DUH!

The level of real estate taxation, and its deductability toward income taxes are a major factor.

The recent US tax law eliminates deductability for R.E. taxes over $10,000. I am wondering how it will affect the top of the market?

I am liking the current low unemployment rate

On the news last night: Guns that require the owners fingerprints to operate is a reality, however the last comment made was that gun shops would not sell them. Sorry--not much more than that.

If finger print guns work like finger print scanners on mobile phones then you're in trouble if someone breaks into your house.
