So you put it like there's an obvious contradiction in there but is there in the meaning or does it just sound like that? Most people who say stuff like this want a certain aspect of the constitution changed, while still acknowledging the overall purpose of it. It's understandable that with certain changes in society the constitution adapts to that. It makes less sense that the everchanging society keeps adapting to a constitution from the 1800s. You pose it as if there's a conflict in those two things these people say.

An interesting perspective.

I've heard both arguments. One that says it's an old-fashioned document for another age. Another that says it's the best blueprint for a nation that humans have created to date. The fact that it can be amended is a testament to it's built-in flexibility. So I don't fully buy the "old-fashioned" claim, particularly when compared to the other nations on the planet. But I'm also not inclined to think it's a flawless plan for the betterment of all of humanity.

At the rate humanity is evolving, a better plan will not likely take shape in our lifetimes. Technology has shifted the whole landscape so that we can't rely on previously observed human patterns. We're not evolving much physically, by our cultural evolution is in overdrive, thanks to a brisk age of instant communications.

 

I get that but I feel like most people do not. I dont think people understand that flexibility. It was made to be changed for a reason. We are supposed to alter it to fit the times, but suggest tweaking, oh say....the 2nd amendment and everyone loses their minds

 

It obviously can be a slippery slope as well. I definitely understand conservative reluctance too.

Agreed. I've suggested serialized ammunition for over a decade. It would close a LOT of criminal loopholes and ensure LEGAL gun operation.
