Hey Man, Yes-the FuGGs--right on... Nah not from those daze--although we still have the films and slides from the lightshow we did for them for a couple of years. We all went to high school together except for Fee..this is while the Haight was going on... Here's some info! Later LionHeart "In 1972, the Beans and Arizona merge to form the Tubes, a band ranging in musicianship from drummer Charles L'Emprere "Prairie" Prince's ability to play sessions with George Harrison, Nicky Hopkins and, later, Journey, to synthesizer player-to-be and fellow Art Institute student Michael Cotten's musical ignorance. When the band plays in the Art Institute cafeteria, it learns that former college actor, and muscular equipment man John Waldo "Fee" Waybill can sing lead vocals. Then, on Polk Street, where he's painted the interior of the Palms Cafe to match its name, Cotten meets Re (as in "Fee") Styles, seen in Alexandro Jodorowsky's arty The Holy Mountain as the mistress of a demented art dealer. She becomes the willing distaff side of "Mondo Bondage." With guitarists Steen, and Spooner, bass player Rick Anderson and keyboard man Vince Welnick, the Tubes are at full rock-star strength: seven Greggs and a Cher." "THE TUBES captured the imagination of the British public in 1977 when they were forced to tone down their stage show by the local government authority in London. Word got out that the "Mondo Bondage" Tour was perverse and depraved. However, the publicity did them no harm and they established themselves as an essential "live" act during this period with characters like "Dr Strangekiss" and "Quay Lewd" adding spice to their theatrical show. The group were formed by vocalist Fee Waybill with guitarist Bill Spooner and college friends Vince Welnick(Keyboards), Michael Cotten (synthesizer), Roger Steen (guitar), Rick Anderson (bass), Prairie Prince (drums) and Re-Styles (dancer). Their music - as reflected on their Al-Kooper produced debut in 1975 - was loud and brash but the early albums never quite lived up to the stage act which was subsequently immortalized on the double-album "What Do You Want From Life". By the time of the BBC concert recording in 1981 their wild stage show had been somewhat tamed and, as reflected in the later albums "Remote Control" (1979) and "The Completion Backward Principle" (1981), the music moved away from punk to finely-sheened AOR with production by Todd Rundgren and David Foster respectively. The band finally folded in 1984. Waybill went on to write songs for AOR balladeer Richard Marx amongst others. Although the rest of the band continued to tour under The Tubes name, Bill Spooner and Vince Welnick spent some time with The Grateful Dead. Re-Styles became a landscape gardener." The Tubes

Sorry to go off topic--but someone asked me about the Tubes--I'm on my knees begging for ...oh never mind. I just skimmed the posts and most of the ones I would choose are listed.. So this is one I love 59t Street Bridge Song By Simon and Garfunkle Slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the mornin' last. Just kickin' down the cobblestones, Lookin' for fun and feelin' groovy. Ba da da da da da da, feelin' groovy. Hello, lamppost, whatcha knowin'? I come to watch your flowers growin'. Ain'tcha got no rhymes for me? Doo it doo doo, feelin' groovy. Ba da da da da da da, feelin' groovy. I got no deeds to do, no promises to keep. I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep Let the morningtime drop all it's petals on me Life, I love you, all is groovy! Ba da da da da da da ba bap a dee... and then there's 'Woodstock'--by Joni and CSN&Y Geez and then to the "Hippie Revolution Heart" This one by Dylan Come gather 'round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'. Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin' For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin'. Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled There's a battle outside And it is ragin' It'll soon shake your windows And rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin'. Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is Rapidly agin' Please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin'. The line it is drawn The curse it is cast The slow one now Will later be fast As the present now Will later be past The order is Rapidly fadin' And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'. Peace LionHeart
Imagine by the Beatles has to be my pick for the hippie song; it sums up the hippie attitude so well. Has anyone heard the cover of Imagine done by A Perfect Circle? Awesome stuff and i usually hate covers.
I know I'm nit-picking but I'm pretty sure that song was John Lennon solo and was released after the hippy 60's era... though it does have the hippie attitude you're right
Hi Everyone, I've been thinking about the 'ONE' song..it stretches my brain cells to the limit. I love so many and so many make me weep-truly. I guess it depends on what kind of mood or moods you're in too, to pick one that really "says it"...these favorites say a lot about the sensuous, free love, free spirited-lives we led in the 60s and well into the 70s-80s-90s--and Now. You Shook Me by Led Zeppelin You know you shook me. You shook me all night long. [X2] You shook me so hard baby. Baby, baby, please come home. I have a bird that whistles and I have birds that sing. [X2] I have a baby, won't do nothing ...oh, buy a diamond ring. I said you shook me, baby. You shook me all night long. [X2] You shook me so hard, baby. You shook me all night long. OR Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin You need coolin', baby, I'm not foolin', I'm gonna send you back to schoolin', Way down inside honey, you need it, I'm gonna give you my love, I'm gonna give you my love. Wanna Whole Lotta Love You've been learnin', baby, I bean learnin', All them good times, baby, baby, I've been yearnin', Way, way down inside honey, you need it, I'm gonna give you my love... I'm gonna give you my love. You've been coolin', baby, I've been droolin', All the good times I've been misusin', Way, way down inside, I'm gonna give you my love, I'm gonna give you every inch of my love, Gonna give you my love. Way down inside... woman... You need... love. Shake for me, girl. I wanna be your backdoor man. Keep it coolin', baby. No offense, Lionheart, but I don't think of Zep as being "hippies". The lyrics for "Whole Lotta Love" were apparantly lifted wholesale from Willie Dixon's "You need Love". They stole a lot of other riffs and lyrics, whole and partial. Listen to any Soirit? You might stumble upon the guitar part for "Stairway to Heaven" somewhere in their catalogue. But your earlier suggestion of Woodstock has merit. Me, I'm gonna stick the Airplane's "Volunteers of America". For the whole psychedelic experience, without which the Sixties would have been like the Nineties or even now, I nominate an album: "It's a Beautiful Day" by the Sixties SF band of the same name. A GREAT LP to trip with, IMO. Also: Moody Blues' "In Search of the Lost Chord".
I just SO love that LP, Tara. I wish I could play drums like Val Fuentes plays (still). The first time I heard that was the first time I did mescaline; I was 16 and it was Scottsdale, Arizona, near the Uni. Twas my first profoundly spiritual trip. That trip engraved itself upon my memory for all time. So, as well, did the sound of IABD. Simply the best tripping LP of the era, IMO.
I lived in the greater Pheonix area myself once. Here's hoping that we may we listen to that album together sometime. I agree with you completely. Did you ever listen to the MacDonald and Giles album? Same feeling there for me.
Actually, Tara, I don't have any recollection of hearing that particular LP. I may have, but I must say that I don't recall it. Ah, but there is much I do not recall. Let me say, though, it would be wonderful listening to IABD with you. I do hope that we can meet someday. Bless you and your loved ones.
Jefferson Airplane " Somebody to love" Peter, Paul & Mary " Where have all the flowers gone?" Pink Floyd " Circus Mirror" Crosby, Stills, nash & Yong " Sea of madness"
I agree. Volunteers sums it up for me, but crown of creation kept me on the streets without food or shelter. I was born in 1951 and by the time I was ready, the peace, love, and brotherhood had evolved into long, hard work hours with no pay -- organizing antidraft and antiwar protests, finding housing for kids, getting donations of free medical care and food, stuff like that. Of course, there are all the other fond memories too -- but mainly I associate most with just being so tired from all the work. Robert Eggleton "Rarity from the Hollow" (my new novel)
I'D LOVE TO CHANGE THE WORLD Ten Years After Everywhere is freaks and hairies Dykes and fairies Tell me where is sanity Tax the rich Feed the poor Till there are no Rich no more I'd love to change the world, But I don't know what to do So I leave it up to you Population, keeps on breeding Nation bleeding, Still no feeding no, None for me Life is funny, skies are sunny Bees make honey, Soft and runny no, None for me I'd love to change the world, But I don't know what to do So I leave it up to you, Oh ya, World pollution, no solution Institution, Electrocution Black or white, Rich or poor Helping us to stop the war I'd love to change the world, But I don't know what to do So I leave it up to you "I sleep with my guitar and if she tries to get a little fresh; I give her a slap on the headstock, but sometimes if the feeling’s right;I turn her knobs and strum her g-string;The only time she talks back, is if I stroke her wrong."
Hell YEAH there is! Harpers Bizarre. The 59th street bridge song. "Slow Down. Ya move too fast." "Gotta make the mornin last!" etc...
I really don’t want to step on your toes, but "The 59th Street Bridge Song" AKA "Feelin’ Groovy" was done by Simom & Garfunkel, Harpers Bizarre only did a cover of it. "I would like you to be more self-reliant, show more initiative, and take greater personal responsibility, but check with me first!"
Not a song but a poem about the 60's by Mick Davis.. thought you might want to see it... Forth we came in innocent youth With butterfly wings unfurled We spoke of peace We lived in love Bestowing it over the world Over shattered ruins of joy and truth Our beautiful flowers appeared We cast off war We threw aside hate And all of mankind we revered We opened our eyes We opened our minds We offered to open theirs too We took joy in living And honestly giving And freeing our souls of taboo Come join us in love! Come with us in joy! Unto the whole world we'd exclaim Our music rang forth As our rainbow sublime Illumined idealism's flame Some heard us not Some didn't care Some sneered and called us insane We handed them flowers We offered them peace They rewarded our efforts with pain But still to this day Although we now know This world is not ready for love We circle together Yes we'll work forever To manifest joy from above We know we are strong We'll still sing our song Should Babylon crumble and fall With strength of Spirit We never will quit Until we've enlightened them all So come take my hand Become part of the band And sing that our love will not die Sing loud and sing long Our euphoric love song For love is the ultimate high And thus joined as one we can rise to the sun Knowing at last we are free Above pain and strife Beyond this last life Eternal in bliss we shall be
