I'd like to suggest honorable mention should go to: He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother -Written by B. Scott and B. Russell, as performed by the Hollies The road is long With many a winding turn That leads us to who knows where Who knows when But I'm strong Strong enough to carry him He ain't heavy, he's my brother So on we go His welfare is of my concern No burden is he to bear We'll get there For I know He would not encumber me He ain't heavy, he's my brother If I'm laden at all I'm laden with sadness That everyone's heart Isn't filled with the gladness Of love for one another It's a long, long road From which there is no return While we're on the way to there Why not share And the load Doesn't weigh me down at all He ain't heavy, he's my brother He's my brother He ain't heavy, he's my brother... Peace, poor_old_dad
I think there is song for us. you could say ' dancing in the streets' is one. I mean it is telling you it doesnt matter who you are, just have fun, freedom, gathering all together in the streets. peace and always be grateful!
Nice choice, man. I think two other songs that really sum up the hippy ideology for me are "Give Peace a Chance," and definately Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven."
Schlüßelberg hit mine~! thats the one I would choose as well, Jefferson Airplane: "Volunteers of America."Just wanted to see who came up w/it first on this thread since I'm jumping in it a bit late
Interestingly enough, I just finished Grace Slick's autobiography. Too sanitized for my taste, but a good overview. She 's the archetypical female rocker; she had bigger balls than most of the men. "The Worst of the Jefferson Airplane" is on heavy rotation at my house. That was one tight band, and those guys were GOOD. Tranquility.
eve of destruction by g mc guire. also mathew southern comfort=woodstock and richie havens =freedom are a few that spring to mind....../peace/
We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee; An' we don't take our trips on LSD. We don't burn no draft cards down on Main Street; We like livin' right, an' bein' free. We don't make no party out of lovin'; We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo; We don't let our hair grow long and shagg Like the hippies out in San Francisco do <------ And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball. We still wave 'Old Glory' down at the courthouse, And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all. Hey, leather boots are still in style for manly footwear; Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen. An' football's still the roughest thing on campus, And the kids there still respect the college dean. And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee, A place where even squares can have a ball. We still wave 'Old Glory' down at the courthouse, And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all. And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all, In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA. [Haggard]
I like Everything is Beautiful by Ray Stevens from the early 70s. Everything Is Beautiful Ray Stevens - written by Ray Stevens Jesus loves the little children, all the little children of the world Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight Jesus loves the little children of the world Everything is beautiful in its' own way Like a starry summer night or a snow covered winter's day Everybody's beautiful in their own way Under God's heaven, the world's gonna find a way There is none so blind as he who will not see We must not close our minds, we must let our thought be free For every hour that passes by, you know the world gets a little bit older It's time to realize that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder Everything is beautiful in its' own way Like a starry summer night or a snow covered winter's day Ah, sing it children Everybody's beautiful in their own way Under God's heaven, the world's gonna find a way We shouldn't care about the length of his hair or the color of his skin Don't worry about what shows from without but the love that lives within We're gonna get it all together now and everything gonna work out fine Just take a little time to look on the good side my friend And straighten it out in your mind Everything is beautiful in its' own way Like a starry summer night or a snow covered winter's day Everybody's beautiful in their own way Under God's heaven, the world's gonna find a way
Naked If I Want To (Oops! I meant for this to go in the main thread, but I posted it in the last reply I read. Senior moment.)
"Down in the Gutter but Free"—Canned Heat "Living with the Bear"—John Mayall "Plastic People", "Who Needs the Peace Corps?", "Flower Punk," "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance"—The Mothers of Invention "Almost Cut My Hair"—CSNY "Hippie from Olema"—The Youngbloods (or was that Jesse Colin Young? It was the answer song to "Okie from Muskogee") ... or how about that Ultimate Spinach song that starts out "Mindless cretins..."? That was a favorite greeting by one of my late hippie friends, may he R.I.P. (rock in perpetuity). also "Bass Strings" and "Don't Bogart That Joint, My Friend" and Steve Miller's "Don't Let Nobody Turn You 'Round" plus The Fugs' "I'm Doin' All Right"
Hippie From Olema #5 Bummer! The direct link doesn't work off the Amazon site, so try this one and click the song title instead. "We still take in strangers if they're Haggard"
And don't you know this one had ol' Tricky Dick under his desk in the White House Basement bunker, pissing himself, when he first heard it? (My earliest memoriy of American Presidential Politics is the Watrgate Scandal) We Can Be Together We can be together Ah you and me We should be together We are all outlaws in the eyes of America In order to survive we steal cheat lie forge fred hide and deal We are obscene lawless hideous dangerous dirty violent and young But we should be together Come on all you people standing around Our life's too fine to let it die and We can be together All your private property is Target for your enemy And your enemy is We We are forces of chaos and anarchy Everything they say we are we are And we are very Proud of ourselves Up against the wall Up against the wall fred (motherfucker) Tear down the walls Tear down the walls Come on now together Get it on together Everybody together We should be together We should be together my friends We can be together We will be We must begin here and now A new continent of earth and fire Come on now gettin higher and higher Tear down the walls Tear down the walls Tear down the walls Won't you try Would someone please explain the "forge fred" reference in ln. 5?
too much to read here righ tnow, but did anyone mention the Electric Prunes? for a long time they were my favorite band
I certainly agree with you, but let us both remember the fact that Nixon was pretty much the worst until GWB. And let us both remind the young uns that Johnson was the sonofabitch who escalated the Nam. But this GWB, man, he's in a class by himself. You want to read some cool political forums, bondage.com. (Yeah, OK, old hippie AND kinky. Whatever gets ya through the night, nicht wahr?) I'm pretty much at the point where I think it is our patriotic duty to evade taxes. Just cover your tracks and don't make dumb mistakes. Didn't mean for this to become a Yippie-rant. I still say Jefferson Airplane. They pretty much got the whole Bay area scene encapsulated in "Volunteers" and the above mentioned "We Can Be Together" ( I never heard this Fred thing, need to lsiten again, I reckon); the Haight, Berkeley's Free Speech movement, Oakland's Black Panthers, the whole thing. Heady times, and I miss them, even though I was on the tail end of the heavy shit. My opinion, today's youth REALLY need to stop wanking on RCs and whatnot in the bedrooms of sub(conscious)urbia and hit the fuckin' streets. For a great psychedelic LP, though, I always fall back on White Bird by It's a Beautiful Day. That was on the turntable the first time I ever did mescaline, back around 1970. Sweet violin by David LaFlamme. Good LP for erotic adventures too. Fuck for peace, kiddies!
How about the albumn, ''Electric Music For Your Mind and Body", by Country Joe and the Fish", and the song "Masked Maurauder"
