you know, i almost didn't think of day the earth stood still, because i don't think of it as science fiction so much as what the mainstream wouldbe couldbe shoulde. that's just how i am. there are some fantasy movies that take a science fictional approach, well if one were to be riggorous about it, that could probably be said of 99% of the so called science fiction in movies. but at any rate things like dark crystal, never ending story and even krull, and willow come to mind. so does men in black. the first one. which i saw. can't speak for the second which i haven't. and of course the *wars *trek series of movies for their pretty effects and fantatechno settings. hmmm. most of the things i've read that i would like to have seen turned into the movies i saw in my head reading them, haven't been. that may be just as well. because movies always tell a totally different story from books. for reasons that have little to do with the media itself as far as i can see, nor of what i would consider art, but then maybe that's just me. well i'm half asleep right now so i'm probably forgetting half the good stuff. i'd rather see cherreh's chanure series then nevin's kzinti, but in either case i'd want them directed by ellison, who, as i understand, all to unfortunately for us, is no longer among the corporial. ah, for something totally warped and so "wrong" it had a great deal of humor arising directly from what i would call it's wrongness, and by that i don't mean what the average fanatic would either, there was something called lexx, that i've only ever seen in dribs and drabs on you tube. fortunately seeing some of the drabs they later removed before they did. "the dead do not feel pain" i'm REALLY half asleep because i didn't mentin barbarella either. oddly enough it wasn't the nudity or the suggestive bits that were best about it, although the green pill bit was a classic, but that effect through the wrap around view screen while flying through solid geology formations. and then all the mazelike places. i love mazelike places and really believe humans would be mentally healthier living in them.
I am going to cheat here 1. All Godzilla movies(except that crappy American one with Matthew Broderick) 2. All 5 of the original Apes movies 3. All King Kong movies 4. All Gamera movies 5. War of the Gargantuas
The Matrix The Lawnmower Man Alien Blade Runner 2001 Easy. But, worthy mentions Total Recall Terminator Any of the older Star Wars Tron The Fifth Element The top may actually change at some point, I love sci-fi films.
The Matrix Terminator 2 Aliens (as opposed to Alien - eg: the second one) Star Wars - Empire Stikes Back Contact
Am gunna have to add 'The Island' too. Part sci-fi part action, but one hell of a movie that is way underated and not nearly as noted as it should be - imo.
Alien Star Wars Solaris Sleeper (Woodie Allen) Invasion of the Body Snatchers _- 1978 (Donald Southerland) War of the Worlds - 1953 (Gene Barry)
Star Wars by default because I make my own life sized working R2-D2s lol But my favorite Sci-Fi is not a movie but a TV show.... DOCTOR WHO!
Moon A.I. And Dark City. Two movies that caused 'imagineering' to work it's wonder in my frontal lobes. A.I. Was all but forgotten soon after it was born. I think the concept that a human being is not what it is made of or how [bio~mech] But that the physically is complex enough to allow 'a person' or a tabula rasa structure that learns lives and loves through the 'phenomena' called Sentient consciousnes. Dark City is a great film...It's eclectic setting. The issue of memory and self. The cool bad guys.. Joachim/Boaz
Themnax.. No aint ded yet [says occam] Merely far more resilient than current medical standards. [apparently] I'll reply as i read Dark Crystal i aquired only 1 year back[ watched before tho of course] This is a great flick. To me it sits with Despereaux and Spirited away. Harlan Ellison. Agree. Interesting as when i bought PC Game 'I have no mouth and i must scream' I did so cause it's connection to good writing. Sigh.. Barbarella. My childhood sex dream along with Jenny Auguter in logans run. For those that dont remember she was Sutherlands love interest in 'The Eagle has landed' LOL. I'm an old fart Mazelike places. As in physically like 'the shining' or psychological like [is there a connecton here?] movie 'Mouth of madness' [Sam Niel] Also Int type like 'Primer' a movie that 'could have been so much more' Yes im pretty rigorous. Most sf is sf fantasy Luweewu
