We've had this discussion before. Venom could be considered black metal in spirit, as it was the topics of venom's lyrics that would become corner stones in black metal
The lyrics of Teacher's pet for example? Most black metal bands do have a consistent theme in their music, sometimes they almost take it too seriously. Venom didn't. And the music isn't what we call black metal, the music of the genre developed a few years later. Same thing with the early heavy metal bands like Sabbath and Deep Purple. They may be the first, but it isn't real heavy metal yet. You could call it proto heavy metal.
Yes it is. I wouldn't call Witch retro though. Nice list, however non of them would be on my top 5 metal band list.
Yeah, Wolfmother hasn't really impressed me neither, except their song Woman. It just rocks. I do like quite a few of those fuzzy 70's rock-influenced bands though.
'Silvertide' is talent worth checking out. Not Metal, they're rock - but greatly influenced by fuzzy 70s rock.
I'll check them out. Most of those fuzzed out 70's rock inspired bands I don't consider to be metal. Bongzilla, Cathedral and Sleep and maybe a band like Monster Magnet are, but I think most of them just leans more on rock. Ah well, I guess I could call Witch metal but they're rock in my book. Same thing as with Sabbath.
Do you wish for me to believe that no black metal band has ever recorded something along the same lines of seriousness that Venom did with Teacher's Pet? Are you so naive? So you're saying that Venom didn't have a pretty consistant theme? It would be no stretch to say that every Venom album had a consistant theme of hell, satan, death or something of the like, seems pretty linear to me.
Of course there are other black metal bands that fool around not to seriously with those themes, but that in combination with their music style makes it hard for me to see them as a black metal band.
