    Hmm... to name a few:

The Velvet Underground, The Pixies, The Talking Heads, Modest Mouse, Pink Floyd, T-Rex, Roxy Music, Sleep, Brian Eno, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Depeche Mode, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, The Stooges, Manu Chao, Parliament, RATM, Super Furry Animals, Red Sparrows, Rush, Shpongle, Sigur Ros, Sonic Youth, Yes...

I've been listening to mostly those bands over the last week or two. Love them all. I'd suggest downloading any and all of them. They won't disappoint you. (Other than The Stooges, some of their stuff is really shitty... I like the Raw Power Iggy stuff more than anything).

Now there's a music list, kudos on having Velvet Underground and the Pixies as the 1st two

The Velvet Underground are Gods of music.

Lou Reed should be worshiped by one and all.

I did see John Cale in concert a year or so ago and he really sucked... but I blame being old.

The Pixies are an amazing band... Francis is the best ugly musician in rock history :D

I like about half thouse bands. But, none you listed are really in the same genre as Tool...

I actually liked the second painting better, it was trippy.

What genre would that be? Industrial? Prog? Post-Rock?

I can name you better bands in all three.

Even though most of Industrial just sucks period.

You are close minded for calling me close minded.

I never said that Tool weren't good, I just said that they were overrated.

But yes, I'm a purist when it comes to music. A lot of the music out there is completely terrible. I'm not afraid to say this.

i guess i dont know if tool is overrated or not as i'm not extensively familiar with their music and only know some of it, and as i don't listen to the radio often (and when i do its usually public radio) and have largely given up on discussing music with people i know in real life due to the fact that everyone seems to be largely set in what they like....well, i can't say whether or not its overrated, cause i have no idea how well the public at large actually likes them.

i do think they're pretty good and worth listening too. i dont like them enough to pay money for one of their albums at this point when there are plenty of other bands i like far more.

who knows....i think quality comes into it, but there are plenty of different qualities to look for in music, and plenty of different aspects of it that are enjoyable. some are better than others, but, really, it does depend mostly on what people enjoy in general, and what the musicians enjoy playing. i do think that when it comes to the artistic element rather than mass appeal, it matters more what the musicians like than what the public likes. that is what drives art.

and for the record while i find the first painting you posted an image of to be far nicer than the one after it, i found both paintings to be pretty lousy. the one is better than the other from a technical standpoint, but personal taste still holds a large role in what one enjoys, and personal taste is a fair element to take into consideration.

like many things, it reminds me of beer and the art of brewing. there are many beers that i find are very well made, very complex, overall incredible beers. but these are not always my favorites and not always the most suitable to my palate.....

similarly there are musicians i can appreciate for talent, skill, or other merits, yet fail to enjoy their music on a personal level.

i think your argument has some merit to it, but i also firmly believe that whatever an individual likes has a lot to do with it, too. just because i dislike something does not make it bad, though i will admit there is bad music out there, and i even enjoy SOME music that i truly think is bad (i.e. cypress hill is one of the worst musical groups i can think of, yet i like their stuff...i can't quite say why i enjoy it, but i do)

I would have posted a better Chagall painting, but they were all too big :p

Anyhow... I agree with all of what you're saying. I like certain bad music too (such as Oasis and Nirvana), but I don't claim that it's good to begin with.

All I'm saying is that when you judge music in general, outside of personal taste, there is a huge element of quality to it.

There's lots of Death Metal out there which is extremely good music, but I just can't stand it most of the time, per example.

Well I'll have my APC, Tool, and Deftones. I'll enjoy them all the same even if you don't ;)

[IMG]Tool is my favorite ever, how can you say they are overrated, they hardly get radio time. Maynard is a lyrical master, but they do have a hude cult following.
But are definitly not overrated. Take some acid and listen to Reflections or any of the Lateralus album... Or just watch there videos

This body, this body holding me
reminding me i am not alone here
This body, this body holding me
reminds me this eternal pain is a illlision

Having radio time doesn't mean they are overrated. Dragonforce doesn't get any radio time but still they are overrated. And what are lyrics without music? If your looking for something to read, get a damn book. Also those saying that they aren't mainstream at all, they play their songs on the radio and sell their shirts at Hot Topic. While they may not play them very often, they still play them. The radio is mainstream no matter how much the station says they aren't.
