Didnt know quite where to put this, cos its not exactly heavy metal. But I think this album is my favourite of all time, kind of bored of everything else from the 80s and 90s, there are other albums I've listened to a lot more or was more into at the time. But this one I keep coming back to and dont ever seem to get bored of it. There is some fluff, a few filler songs, which I leave off the playlist. But most of the album is pure genius. Killer basslines and every track thats a full song anyway is a winner http://youtu.be/yCXrgASzf50
It's a great album, and probably my favorite thing Tool has put out. I still remember buying it the exact day it came out in 1996. I was in 10th grade. At the time, I was already a huge fan of their debut album, Undertow. The title-track is by far my favorite on Aenima, and I could not agree more with the sentiments Maynard expresses on this track. '46 & 2' is another great track. Progressive metal I would call it. I am not a huge Tool fan these days, but I still throw this album on every now and then because it is so good -- a perfect combination of cerebral and heavy.
I really like this album as well, it has some of my favorite Tool songs. I agree there is some filler which kind of disrupts the flow of the record for me at times. I think they got it right with Lateralus where they made the filler kind of more thematically relevant to the songs and better segue-ways, for that reason I slightly prefer Lateralus.
I'm not sure that tool is "metal" at all. Being "heavy" or whatever doesn't make it the same - from musical feel to worldview, tool is on a totally different level from most metal - which tends to be a bit trashy and go-nowhere feeling, to me. And not even fun go-nowhere, like punk - just depressing, so you'll sit inside and get more depressed and buy more depressing metal.
There are different types of "metal." Tool definitely falls under the category of metal, but they're a specific type of metal. There are literally dozens on sub-genres within metal. Really, it does not matter how you classify them, but they're typically considered to be progressive or alternative metal, combining elements of prog-rock a'la King Crimson.
I would def consider them more rock/experimental. I freakin love tool! I wanted them and deftones to get together and make an album. That would be the bomb!
Yes that is my JAM! That was the first song I heard by deftones and I've been in love ever since <3 They were supposed to collaborate but it never happened :'(
