I had a trail for a job as a security guard the other day where I was left in charge of a store. The money is good enough but the thing I don't like about it is that it involves lots of standing. I've worked jobs where I'm on my feet all day, but this is different. It just involves walking from one entrance of the store to the other. And to spice things up a bit, I sometimes try just standing near one of the entrances!

The shoes I had on had a hard sole and after all the standing I really felt it in my hips at the end of the day. By the time I got home, one of my hips felt more sore than the other, and left me feeling more comfortable when I walked with a limp. If I could've done something else for just 5 % of my time, it would have been enough to made the difference. I was okay again the next morning but I don't know if I could manage all the standing with such a job. Are there any tricks you can use while standing in order to take weight off the hips? Or are there ways that you can lean without being noticed?

At least people who spend their entire day sitting down have to get up every now and then!

  2. It's a matter of fitness. Eventually you get used to it. I was a sailor and had to stand watches a couple of times a week. At one point after I got out of the Navy (more like escaped with my life) I got a job with a security firm and had to do exactly what you're doing, in a retail store. It's torture walking on concrete all day long. At least a ship was moving, so my ankles were in great shape already. But it still took more than a month of this before my feet felt normal again.

One thing that helped was buying a pair of umpire shoes. The upper looks like a regular black patrol shoe, but the lower is built like an athletic shoe. I usually gets by the assholes who insist you wear black leather boots or low-tops. Neither has a sole made for long walks.

Also, keep moving. When you must stop, lean against one of the steel support poles that are all over the store and pick a particular person to be "observing". A lumbar support like warehouse workers wear will also help with the other pains associated with posture. As you become more fit you'll be able to shed it.

You're just dealing with muscles and connective tissue that have not had adequate loading for the task at hand. Swimming also helps.

I can stand at attention for way way to long. Habit I have, now even when with friends over. I can not sit and party drinking. Ive to stand. Makes difficult to have comfy time tho, makes others nervous.
I too worked security and other long standing jobs .. never really bothered me, til some recent mortons toe, it does some pain on me feet. Barefoot on cold mud, and ice helps tho.. Nice jelly insoles, switch shoes and change socks.

High-top shoes are good for jobs with prolonged standing. Especially ones with softer insoles. If you must stay standing, you can stretch your legs by bending your leg and holding onto your ankle while standing up; this will provide more comfort to your thighs, and prevent muscle stiffness.

    I've been a serjeant-at-arms.

The job provided a chair to sit on, but I happily declined using it. The chair seemed disrespectful of the position.

I stood for hours on end respectfully and honorably.

My standing at full attention by the double doors is probably why the committee asked me repeatedly to perform the serjeant-at-arms duties. Loved that job.

  10. I've done shift work at my local supermarket all standing up.
What I did to combat the soreness was put myself through a routine where i'd walk too and from work.
It helped get rid of the soreness.
I goal umpire footy here locally. I have to stand most of the time but you need to move about a bit.
If you make an effort to walk around a bit you won't get sore.
Also you said you get good money. Look at using that money wisely to do things to help you combat the soreness you experience.
Standing for long periods is not so bad if you can move around a bit.
