The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon

I recorded the first episode last night, but I haven't watched it yet. In the future, will he do better or worse than Jay Leno did? Public consensus seems to be that Jimmy is more real, and less of a self-obsessed prick than Jay. Jimmy built up a large fan base during his time at Saturday Night Live, many of which couldn't stay up late enough to watch his former Late Night show during the week. I think he's going to do just fine in the new job.

There are two things about the change that bother me. First is the assumption by NBC that older people can't be as funny. I don't think Leno's age has anything to do with anything. I wouldn't care if he was 85. The other issue is Jimmy's band, The Roots. They have an established image as a hip hop band, and don't have a brass section. I don't see how this can be an improvement. The old Tonight Show band (Ricky Minor) could play anything. I guess some young people like the fact that The Roots can't play what they think of as "old people's music". Reality check: Jazz isn't any older than the blues.

I predict that Jimmy Fallon won't have much trouble crushing David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel. The real ratings war over the next five years is going to be fought against Steven Colbert. I watch the shows on DVR, so I don't have to choose between them.

He seems to be more talented than the past hosts, starting with Dave Garroway, Jack Paar and Leno. Carson was the king , but Fallon is multi talented including musically. He should have a nice run. I didn't see the show last night.

It's funny, back when he was on, I used to think that late night talk shows were only for old people with insomnia.

Oooops. Nailed me! ----------if I found myself awake and needing a laugh or two--Carson was always there. Just seemed as if he'd always be there.

I watched it last night. It was okay, but I think it will be just fine, I didn't really think of Leno as really funny, but I have watched Jimmy Fallon since his SNL days. As for The Roots, I'm glad they're still his band. I haven't seen their range really because I rarely watched his later show, but from Jimmy Fallon's mouth they can play anything. I noticed they had a few extra members in the band last night...there was at least one brass player up there last night.

If you were old back then, you'd be dead by now. ;)

That could change my opinion of them. They need to be able to play anything.

Leno repeated his punch lines to every joke 2-3-and sometimes 4 or 5 times!! Bugged me.

watched the first show yesterday... I think he'll be alright, doesn't take much to top Leno's performance, he seemed kind of saturated. Anyway, personally I'm not a big fan of either, Fallon is too much in love with his own jokes, imho.

We traded one self-centered old dude (ie Leno) for two hot young guys who are damn funny (ie Jimmy and Seth Meyers). I call it win-win.

I did see his first show with Will Smith and U2. I love Will but could have done without Bono's inflated head to block out the sun.

Also, The Roots are all kinds of awesome. I have seen them play with some pretty heavy hitters from various genres on his other show and they've been able to hold their own. I was so happy to see he'd taken them with him. I think he could've done with a new "wing-man" though. I prefer Andy from Conan.

Jimmy is funny, he's handsome and what's more, he's likable. He comes across as the same slightly nervous, nerdy guy you'd expect him to be in public as he is on TV. I dig that. I watch everything online so to me, there won't be any competition between him and Colbert. I'll still be able to watch my favorite guys of late night at my leisure.

The Roots are considered a Soul band not necessarily hip hop.. Rather the type of band Cliff Huxtable would appreciate. down to earth, maturity, yet witty enough to please younger listeners. Over time they will mature even more, as the audience matures with them.. We should expect to see Fallon on the Tonight Show for a long long time. I dont love him, nor dislike him. But I would rather see Leno for a little bit longer. idk..

    Johnny Carson smilie >.. :sultan:

Yes!!! Colbert is a comedy genius! I should have expected no less from him.

When have you ever seen the host of a show appear on his biggest competitor's show? I never have. But we should always expect Colbert to break all the rules, as long as it's funny, clever, and creative. He doesn't give a fuck.

I'll bet some of those pennies went all the way down to Jimmy Fallon's ass crack. :D

I think the best thing he ever did was co-anchor the SNL Weekend Update with Tina Fey. It was great because they were so opposite. She was the cool, pretentious bitch from everybody's high school.

I did see a trumpet and a sax, down there with the tuba that's mostly for looks, since they have electric bass guitar.

No matter what they are, it still seems strange for a show like that to have a real band, with a real history, and CD's that you can buy in the store, instead of a "human jukebox" kind of band that can duplicate any style on demand, but has no style of their own.

Do the Roots not ever want to go on tour again, or record another studio album? Why is it that they have so much time to hang out with Jimmy Fallon all the time? I don't get it.

I noticed that Leno didn't say goodbye on the air to Ricky Minor, or thank him for doing a good job. That was weird. Comments like that are expected, at a time like that. I guess it was just another gig to Ricky. He has no sense of humor at all, and never could kid around with Jay the way Kevin Eubanks did.

If he can read the cue cards and do decent interviews, he'll be fine. He now has a large staff of talented comedy writers working for him. He has plenty of talent himself. Can you imagine Jay Leno trying to do hip hop dance with Will Smith? All they could do was photoshop his head onto somebody else's body.

Right now, the toughest competition in the comedy world is for top-quality comedy writers. SNL has lost a lot of good people over the years to the growing list of nightly talk shows. It takes a team to come up with quality material every day, week after week. No one person can do it.

Letterman has suddenly become a dinosaur, and Kimmel never was terribly relevant. Conan O'Brien? America is so over his fake fag routine. So unfunny and inappropriate, for the times we're living in. Only Colbert's future seems secure right now.

I feel bad for Jay. Was there anybody in America who loved his job more than he did? Everybody wishes they had a job they love that much.

I think it's great that he did three stand-up gigs in Miami last weekend. When you love to do comedy and life isn't going your way, what do you do? More comedy! Too bad it isn't online.

Seeing Jerry Seinfeld doing standup last night reminded me how much talent we have going to waste, because there aren't enough shows for everybody. I miss Jerry, and I miss Chris Rock. I even miss dead people, like Bob Hope and Richard Pryor. How many hilarious, insightful jokes have we missed by now?

    You nailed it!

I have very few personal memories of watching him, but I've seen some old footage.

It amazes me how much Jimmy Fallon has brought back from the Carson years! The set looks similar, the curtains are the same color, and he has a sidekick standing around, off to the left (like Ed McMahon). Even the round logo is retro. Didn't Jack Paar use something like that?

    Even Stuart and Colbert?

I don't think there is anything more important for a comedian to be doing with his time right now than to point out all the stupid things that politicians do and say. Nobody does it better than those two guys. The insanity of politics needs to be pointed out to everyone, and the intermixing of comedy entertainment with serious material is good exercise for your brain.

Their attitude of not letting bad news get you down is the key to a long, healthy, and happy life.

I never really dug lenos delivery, and Fallon...well, like so much of SNL's repetitive shtick he kind of grew on me after a while. I suppose he'll be fine.
I wouldn't mind seeing someone like Jim Carry, or maybe even Carl Black, that would be a hoot!
I so rarely watch TV these days.. in fact I'm so behind on pop culture, I probably wouldn't even get half the jokes.

I think it's a bad move using a band like the roots for a house band, but it's appropriate I suppose, the networks are all desperate to lure a younger audience. It's becoming apparent the music industry and broadcast media really don't give a fuck about anyone over thirty anymore.

I wasn't a big Leno fan, so I can't see him doing much worse; but I don't like Jimmy Fallon either.

He laughs at his own jokes too much and his interviews are extremely variable.

But he does have a way with the stars. He gets them performing all kinds'f interesting little skits.

All in all, it will be better. But it still won't beat Craig Ferguson.

I saw Jay Leno do a stand-up live in Vegas once. He was way funnier outside the regulations of NBC. He also has an amazing car collection that gear heads like me would only dream to own. It ain't easy to see him step down.

How does Letterman himself not get sooooo bored after all this time.

If it was my I'd just want to punch Shaffer in the face every time I look at him by now
