Hell, they'll make the darn things, if push comes to shove. And the contest begins when they begin to write the legislation for the passing of such and like said, we'll be into the next century. Just trying to be real here, instead of doing just wishful thinking.
Any firearm can be scary, not just assault weapons. I'm particularly afraid of un-registerd weapons, which doesn't get much play in this thread. When posters decry "assault weapons" they are decrying the object of thier fears, not any technological defintion. This purpose is to take attention off of retail gun crime. Discussions of retail crime in general tend to blow oxygen to Republician talking points. Wholesale Gun Crime is just rare enough that the contours of perception are more easily shaped by media opinion makers. Its perps more easily objectified, and demonized. The outliers ignored in media coverage.
Upping this post. I care far too much for our Government Workers to send them out to collect firearms from some of these freaks.
Yes, and they must first grandfather in the owners of what's already out there. And how would you even do that and for knowing what they have and where they're hidden, while no judge is going to issue search warrants for every home in America. And let me remind Newo, that the sale of automatic firearms have banned since 1943. There is a difference between auto and semi-auto, you know and for the latter covering so many models that it's virtually impossible to distinguishing an assault rife and what it's capable of doing with so many others out there. Sooooooo, for nipping gun control in the bud for future sales of imports and for US manufactures, this is probably the only thing that will work and assuming that you could ever get it passed.... Rough draft here, but for rifles and to basically cover both rim and center fire cartridges. Fixed magazine only. 10 round max. Bolt action operation only, so no pumps, no levers and above all, no auto (already outlawed without special consideration) or semi-auto's. Min. 22" barrel length. Shotguns to be limited to single shot and double barrel only and with the min barrel length law that in place now of about 20". Revolvers only for handguns. No need to having to mention an assault weapon for either, as these animals no longer legally exist in any form. It would suit me just fine, as bolt actions are my favorite for accuracy, double action revolvers for dependability and for a double barreled shot gun being all one should need, in any hunting situation and/or home protection in most all cases. Law enforcement and military excluded for all of the above, but of course.
Oooh, speaking of double barrel shotties, this is on my Christmas list. Not sure which model I like more but the 12" desperado has a nice "Mad Max" feel to it which certainly seems to fit with the current times. Products | American Gun Craft
How do they even get away with making a pistol like that, while you're not allowed to cut the barrel off below the 18" limit of your own shotgun?. Well, you can, but it takes legal time and paper work and yes permit money as well.... Shotgun Barrel Length: What’s Legal and What Isn’t – Silencer Central
Maybe something to do with it's being a blackpowder firearm? Not sure. More to point I think simply that it's life begins and ends as a pistol, nothing cut down. Sort of like the M1 "enforcer" pistol mod based on the .30 carbine I'd imagine. I could buy as many as I like but god forbid I mod my m1a1 into one. VS Iver Johnson Arms Enforcer
A shotgun is defined by the ATF as : AND From the NRA I find it interesting that the last two posts seem to be along the lines of ..."Gee, guns are great! I want some more!"
Didn't realize it was black powder. That changes everything as far as the laws are concerned. And I think you can modify most anything, by waiting for an ungodly amount of time and for doing a lot of paper work. Not to mention spending $200 and up for a special license, while they're checking out, you and your family for the last three generations. Oh, and don't think of doing any of this, until you're approved, since knocking on your door might be a part of the process.
Yep, no sense to it anyway as one can just buy an enforcerto begin with, no need to mod or trim, just starts life as a pistol variant and stays that way.
Well I've always been fairly clear where I stand on the subject. We all see the senseless violence in all shapes and forms these days, some of us simply don't plan to leave our asses hanging in the wind to the care of "public servants".
I have always felt the same way to a point and for knowing that the cops are only minutes away, when just seconds count. But lately, I've had to modify my thinking somewhat and for we all having to do something in the immediate, even if it's wrong for some and does no good at all in the long haul. Soooooooooo, I think that my proposal, of what should stay in place, as legal firearms, is a justifiable compromise, that should work for everyone, except the bad guys. In addition, if there are some real die hard collectors out there, that don't mind going through the special licensing that's in place now for illegal firearms, then we can do that also, without much ill effect and since very few crazies will even bother with such an attempt.
I suppose we could go back to rocks and clubs like in the beginning, but it's so much more efficient to use these modern firearms to get a point across. Progress.
Rocks and clubs require brute force and some degree of skill, not everyone has time or energy for that. I sure know I'm not trying to be any sort of MMA fighter given the shape of my lungs but I'll sure not be at a disadvantage as a result.
And to why I carry so much, with being too old to run and too old to fight. Even though, my greatest fear is for possibly having to use it. And it goes without saying, that if you should somehow save the life of a no Sayer, they would be forever grateful.........or would they be and for maybe making excuses, while standing firm?
My neighbor had her throat slit by a serial killer. They had guns in the house, I had guns in the house. Didn't help. You can go on living in fear all your life and carrying all sorts of guns around with you all the time. Or you can just live.
Nothing needs to be grandfathered. Buy back the guns or order them to be turned in and destroyed under penalty of law. No need for warrants or door to door searches. You get caught with an illegal gun, you go to jail, period. Automatic weapons were banned in 1934 becasue they were deemed too dangerous. Bonnie and Clyde were so hard to apprehend because they had Browning Automatic Rifles which out shot the Tommy guns the police had. Here's Clyde with two of them. People had more sense back then. If the guns were dangerous they outlawed them. Now we have a gun culture that worships guns over children. Many pistols are called automatics. I've had a few with the word automatic stamped into the weapon. Assault rifles are not assault weapons. Assault rifles have selective fire. On your suggestions. Rifles should be limited to three rounds. In PA a shotgun magazine, when used for hunting is limited to two rounds. Of course if you want to open carry into Walmart or the local pizza parlor there is no magazine limit. Go figure. Bolt action is fine, good Idea. Revolver idea is also good. Limited to five rounds with empty chamber at hammer. And I'd add a limit on ammo and registration of ammo purchases. I have to sign for off road diesel fuel, and when I drop off used oil at Pep Boy's, for christ's sake.
Problem with your first few sentences is for insuring that no new gun laws of this sort will ever get passed and if they do, then we'll have a little civil war on our hands.
