Ohhh. OK. Here we call it sales tax. And I agree it is quite annoying. And even more so because it's different in different state. And some states even have a different amount depending on the type of product. I can see how that would be extremely annoying to a foreigner. We are kind of used to it because it is almost always around 5% so unless you are really scraping pennies you just assume it will be 5% more. Some places like Delaware which is close to me has no sales tax....Guess what. Prices there are about 5% higher than most similar things in Maryland which is right there on the border.

No meagain does quite a bit of research to make a point even though it never changes anyone's mind.

I didn't need to look up this stuff though I have seen my mom's checks since I was 10 years old.

of course, that doesn't mean they can actually go home with $2.13 an hour in most states. generally if their pay plus tips adds up to less than minimum wage, the employer is required to make up the difference. so they are getting at least minimum wage one way or another.

in your link, i saw 6 exceptions. 5 states didn't show any obligation for them to make any more than $2.13, and wyoming randomly chose $5.15 as their minimum overall take-home.

I've worked out a trick for this over the years.

For me, staying up front these days is not a priority. I just don't have fun standing at the front for 3 hours. So I go to the bar for drinks. No you gotta wait until you're gonna blow before breaking that seal, and you just need to time it so that you go to the toilet just as everyone else is at the bar before the last set. Then toilet, have a friend get drinks, meet in the mosh pit. I dunno what concerts you go to, but head banging around and being in a mosh pit, I think you're so concerned about what is happening around you that you just don't notice you need to toilet. Also you expel so much energy I honestly believe in my case, I hate this about my body, but I perspire a lot when I warm up. So I really do think you can sweat out a lot of fluids which generally happens when moshing at metal concerts.

I just feel that, I definitely need drinks at a concert, even if it's just to give me enough courage to push pass people to get where I need to get to in order to see, and bang my head.

That idea is great but how does the employer know how much is made in tips. He can (and has) just said I don't believe that is how much you made in tips.
Not the best business practice but for people that don't try to get revenge...the bosses will be happy to keep the suckers that are forced to wait out until tips get better.

I wouldnt say it's dumb. It's just different. We all know you can't handle different cultures though so that comment is expected.

    Absolutely.

When I watched The Foo last summer, I rocked out harder than I had in a long ass time, and I was stone sober.

I've learned as I've gotten older that I don't NEED to get fucked up to have a good time.

How long can you hold a full bladder for? On a regular day, when I am just drinking water, I have to go pee every 90 minutes to every 2 hours. And that is on a good day. When I am drinking alcohol, my water intake also increases, and I have to go pee every 30 - 45 minutes. I suppose I could just not drink water while I drink alcohol, but then my mouth would be so fucking dry and who wants that?

You are definitely right about not having to pee as much if you are sweating hard, though. I just find if I have been drinking, and then I am rocking out at a concert, I get incredibly thirsty and I lose energy fast.......

You just have to plan your alcohol and water intake in advance.

I don't think that would necessarily happen. But there is definitely a "tip or else" aspect to the tipping culture, which is why I hate it.

Some places have a mandatory tip % added to the bill, at least for 5 or more people, which I think is better. I'd rather just pay more at the fixed rate, then tip if I felt like it.

I didn't read the majority of this thread, but I went to a bar today and tipped $2 on a $5 drink. It made me feel like a human being.

Well, I usually don't tip at all, so, for once, I felt like I was doing something good. I know that I wasn't though, so there was no real misleading. It only made me feel "like" I was a human being, not like an actual human being. I am aware of my non-human nature all too well...
