Time is just as real as space. As far as I understand, Einstein explained a relationship between them in E=MC2. Maybe you math experts can break it down.

As far as I understand it, the E is energy. The M is matter and the C is the speed of light. The concept of speed is expressed as distance per hour (or miles or meters per hour). The hour is of course a time element.

I think of it as when I’m driving a car: when I’m driving... I think 150 miles to go… if I drive at fifty miles per hour, I’ll get there in three hours. But if I go 75 miles per hour, I’ll get there in two hours.

Time is real in the sense that it can be experienced. It is not static. It is related to distance by the formula E=MC2. How would that formula look extrapolating time to one side of the equal sign?

It’s just as real as other phenomena. Physicists use the concept of time in their calculations all the time (no pun intended). The computers we’re sitting at all use clocks.

That does not mean we really know the ontological nature of time or any other phenomena.

We can measure it and use it for our purposes (like we use electricity). But there is a difference between merely understanding some mathematical relationship and knowing the ontological nature of the phenomena.

The period known as the 'second' is an arbitrary period. It is a system created by man. It is a standard. We all agree to the same period. If we didn't, our computers wouldn't work.

We really don't know 'what it is'. We do experience it though.

I tried to understand but I never understood when people proclaim time to be an illusion and man made. Yes, it may appear different when you're out of orbit but it's still there. How can it not be real. Just because there is one moment in existence at a time doesn't mean there is proof and experience of former moments. It may not be static but it seems pretty fucking linear to me :p

To me too. But the square in E=MC2 is a non-linear function. That might affect time in some non-linear way.

Where are the math experts when you need them...

What if math isn't real... It was also just created by man.

Only the measurements where created by man. Just like with time.

Animals use time but they do not use clocks. Whenever we have to change the clocks for Daylight Savings time my cat and dog know when it is time to get up and time to eat.... they do not care one bit what my clock indicates. :sunny:

I've heard (and read) this question posed before. I will state now what I did years back...to me, time is "real" because I have memories...I can visit cemetaries and SEE there are numerous people that had a specific amount of time on this earth...my father being one of them.
I have a son...I remember him being born and he is now 28 yrs old. That alone speaks to me of the passage of time.
I do think that time seems to go faster or slower according to what we are doing, who we are with, and etc. However, that (the faster or slower perception) does not alter the fact that time is real.
