Did you watch Putin's speech yesterday? The one in which he basically denied Ukraine's sovereignty, announced the annexation of two of its provinces, and justified it all in terms of national irredentism similar to that which led to the two World Wars. Seems like deja vue all over again--Hitler invading Sudetenland cuz the Czechs were pushing good Germans around. There are lots of fine Russian people, but he isn't one of them. He's challenging several international treaties that are the very foundation of the world order. We had the idea back in the 40s that standing up to the Nazis was important, since sooner or later our own security would be in danger if we didn't. Roads, parks, social programs and helping low income folks stay afloat is fine, but all that depends on a stable world order which is being challenged by another dictator with grandiose plans to restore Russian's greatness..

I knew the FSB would have its trolls working overtime after Putin's bombshell yesterday. Surely you're not one of them, but I wonder where you got your information or what you're talking about. Putin annexes parts of Ukraine and you're ranting about the fascist West being more toxic than ever. Get real.

Because it seems to be a replay of Hitler's irredentist move on the Sudetenland. The Soviet Union is over. .No need to defend its fascist kleptocratic successor. An attack on Ukraine is potentially an attack on the rest of the ex-Soviet empire and risks the biggest military confrontation in Europe since World War II.

Your whattaboutism goes back aways and isn't really in point. Egypt became a dictatorship as a result of domestic coup d'etat in 2013 against a Muslim brothehrhood-controlled regime, during the Obama Administration. The United Arab Emirates seems to have been actively supporting it , and most Arab states welcomed it or were neutral. The role of the United States, if any, remains obscure.

The Pinnochet coup against Allende in 1973, also a domestic development rather than an invasion, albeit one with foreign backing, did have CIA fingerprints all over it. A Century of Revolution: Insurgent and Counterinsurgent Violence during Latin America’s Long Cold War The President at the time was Tricky Dick Nixon.

As for Israel and the Palestinians, I tend to be sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, but Israel's responses to it in the midst of terrorist attacks on Israel don't have quite the expansionist sinificance that Putin's annexation of territory belonging to a sovereign country on the pretext of alleged abuses of the Russian polulation in eastern Ukraine. The U.S. and its NATO allies seem to be responding to legitimate national security concerns grounded in international law and the U.N. Charter..

True to form, our Quisling former President, the Donald has praised Putin's move as a stroke of genius, and suggested a similar move over here could solve the problem on our southern border. Does he want to annex all of Mexico or just the northern part?
