Sorry to hear things took a turn. Hope it is speedy recovery and you can go home. But if you have to go to rehab, it’s for the best.

Update on Thurs 14th, at night. Tomorrow they move me to another rehab facility, where I'll probably spend about two weeks. A piece of bone in the hip shifted and can't get evaluated by the surgeon 'til next Wed. So I might as well keep building up strength in all the other muscles and the good leg. If next Wed he says I can bear a small amt of weight on the operative hip, then I can go home!! Yay!! If not, it's another 3-4 weeks in rehab. We shall see.

Not gonna be fun getting to know another set of nurses and therapists, and a new doc, but that's the way it's going to be for awhile. Dammit.

Will try to post again tomorrow night or the day after settling in there. Thanks for the notes.

Ok, update on the new long-term rehab facility. HELP, HELP, HELP !!!!

Seriously, this is the most poorly-run, piss-ant level, barely functioning medical-related place I have, in 44 yrs as a nurse, ever seen !

I got here late Thurs. afternoon. I was put into a bed and then saw no other human for 4 hours, and that was just an aide for a few moments! It was 2 more hours before a nurse came by to give me some of the meds that had been ordered when I came here. A brief conversation and that was the last human contact for six more hours!

I found out that the 'call button', which in most places allows a back and forth request with the nurse's station, ONLY LIGHTS A BULB IN THE STATION! No way to explain your needs. Pushing it repeatedy does no good. It could be anywhere from 20 min to one hour (I tried it) before someone notices and then has to come down to your room to ask the problem. If you'd needed the urinal emptied for re-use, too bad! If you'd needed the bedside commode for a poop, too bad! This is unbelievable!

Then I asked what the patient / staff ratio was that evening ('til 7 or 8 am). It was 1 NURSE AND 1 AIDE FOR 27 PATIENTS!! This is not only absurd, but dangerous in a medical facility.

And the staff of 'aides' are a surly group who rarely speak in response, and when they finally show up, act as if you've bothered them by needing something and do the absolute minimum required and leave quickly. Yet they stand out in the hallway laughing and talking loudly amongst themselves.

At 10 am Fri. (18 hrs since getting here) I finally spoke with a therapist, he did a quick evaluation and I explained my situation and physical shortcomings. He said he'd see me on Monday and left.

It's now Sat. afternoon and I am slowly losing my mind!! Wife comes to visit for a few hrs as often as she can. The wifi password didn't work last night, I just now got it explained.

Seems that I've gone from a modern rehab facility into something from the 1960s. The bed is antiquated and extremely uncomfortable and my right hip hurts with movement. I'm under orders to not put any weight on my right leg, so moving is difficult without considerable help, which when I get it is minimal. So, basically, I'm miserable at present.

Sorry to go on for so long, but this is NOWHERE near what I'd expected. Thanks for listening to me bitching about the situation.
I see the surgeon on Wed. and he'll decide if I can put some weight on the leg and thus can GO HOME. Oh, please God.

I am unhappy to hear that... I will be extra careful with my bones from now on.

What a terrible place! Sounds like something from Charles Dickens.

I hope you can go home soon!

Thanks, Zenmiester. Just another day here in limbo. Tomorrow I'm supposed to see the new Phys Therapy folks. Scary. Met them briefly on Fri and they didn't seem very friendly, sort of 'by-the-book' and "this is how we do it here" types.

Still worrying what the surgeon is going to say on Wed. I'm preparing to almost demand him to let me go home where I'll have more support from my retired nurse wife and can pay for home-health Physical Therapy than at this piss-poor excuse for a hospital.

Matey, since you've been bed-ridden for some days, be very careful of the physio-terrorists !!! They'll want to get you up and mobile (despite the instruction not to weight-bear on your right leg) and so they'll probably come with a couple of elbow crutches and have you walking (hopping) up and down the bay for a while.

They should have supplied you with a bed that has a plastic mattress which can be plugged into a box hung on the bottom of the bed that supplies heat and vibration to the mattress when you lay down - they are magnificent and supremely comfortable.

Sounds best to go home. Check yourself out!

But have the ride home, and support at home, arranged in advance.

My best doctor told me to take care of myself... probably the best advice ever.

You are definitely in my prayers :)
