Some of my concerns, not in order of importance:

• The deal I remember was Mexico was paying for it.
• It's devastating to desert wildlife which wanders around looking for water.
• Most immigrant come in by legal ports of entry and overstay visa. Border crossings are at historic lows, and the wall wouldn't help anything.
  
• You'd have to use eminent domain to seize Americans land.
• The shutdown is already cost the US more money than the wall funding he wants.
  
• $5,000,000,000 is a lot of money to be spent on something that can be defeated by a $50 ladder.

Once CBP and TSA have to quit to keep feeding their families and many more flights are canceled, you're going to start seeing oil and healthcare execs checks stop pouring into the coffers of senators, and there will be a compromise. The other would be a declaration of emergency by the president which would be in the supreme court before a brick was laid, and would almost certainly be canceled. Either way this will end, but not before the government loses some very qualified people in charge of actually protecting the border.

Bonus points: The wall already exists, with a few holes in places where it would be insane to build. (On mountains, on rivers...)

I'm always reminded of this (partially because of the Love Parade really). I think that what once divided Berlin was so sad. I don't even know the story behind it or what the political motivation for it was. But I think that a people divided is a bad thing.

People keep talking about border security. There are lots of drugs that come over through that border. Left unchecked, we would be inundated with the stuff! And it's a problem. Americans are addicted to drugs. There ought to be a legalization effort; that way it's out of the hands of the black market, and would be regulated by the FDA (food and drug administration) such that there wouldn't be impurities, dosing disparities etc. Sure, there would still be a health crisis as those things aren't good for you. But many of our issues would be addressed. Anyway... that discussion works better in another thread.

I think we should just allow people to flood into the country unimpeded because that is like, tolerant and stuff. Borders are fascist and racist. Countries should not exist.

Not only should these poor souls be allowed to flood into this fascist country of white privilege, but suck off the resources courtesy of the US taxpayer.

As Ron Paul has said, if you want to stop people coming into the country illegally, end entitlements to illegals.

And as far as drugs... most of the drugs are not brought into the country by Mexicans walking across the border on foot, or even by driving in vehicles, but by big ships and military aircraft. Ya know, the same people who throw you in jail for possessing them.

 

To this I would like to add

-No real environmental assessment has been completed
-No assessment has been completed as to the long term costs of upkeep on the wall
-Imminent domain lawsuits would likely drag out for years in court
-The requested 5 billion would only build a few miles of wall. The true cost of a 2000 mile wall would be a drain on our budget for years and years
