I have this urge to like, play old school games I miss Secret of Evermore and those dorky platform games like Mario and Bubsy XD Battletoads!! OMG. The systems are kind of pricey though, really regretting selling mine on ebay all those years ago now. $500US for a in boxed Secret of Evermore with map and manual... I sold mine for about $20. XD
have you thought about bying the controllers on ebay or something and installing an emulator on your computer? that way you have the authentic feeling of the controls in your hands but you also have the benefit of being able to download any game you want. i have one installed on my computer and its my favorite emulator.
I have thought about the emulator but don't they take up a lot of room? And I'm also a bit of a retro collector when it comes to these things. I have a habit of spending a lot of money for the real deal and also, I think I'd like to see the old games all blown up and pixelated on my TV screen.
bsnes / higan is a good emulator. i like to hook it up to my tv with an hdmi cable and use an snes controller. the games aren't much more than a megabyte, they could do a lot with a megabyte back then. i also have the original console, the games have a battery that maintains the saved state. after 20 or so years sometimes the battery goes dead and you lose ur save and have to replace it. this doesn't happen with an emulator. zelda and secret of mana were the best i emulate NES games too. NES systems are hard to get working reliably. With an emulator you can even save these games where there was originally no save feature because you can save ur exact place in the game. I had to replace the battery in my zelda cartridge. i can emulate game boy / gameboy color / gameboy advance games too but the graphics look really bad on a 1920x1080 LCD monitor.
So the cartridge themselves have a battery? Wow, I remember once in Secret of Evermore, all my saves were deleted and I never managed to figure out why that happened, but that was still during the SNES days so it wouldn't have gone dead. So if I get a real console, how do I go about replacing these batteries? Is it easy to do yourself? I spoke to my missus about the emulator, she wants the console too hehe. Secret of Mana I never played, but I hear it's really similar to Evermore but it's a Japanese based game so the dialogue isn't as witty or a comedic as Evermore. As for Zelda, I remember a child I saw the golden Link box and I remember thinking "man that must be the funnest game ever" but we never had a console then. XD
for 500 bucks, get a small computer that hooks up to your tv, get a bunch of controllers for for all retro consoles and a wireless mouse/keyboard, and now you have a console that can play ANY retro game for free and can surf the web on your tv, not to mention play movies and music. what a deal!!! i want to buy some n64 controllers they are pretty hard to map out on other controllers. also game cube is an awsome emulator to have.
I just bought a console on ebay. =) I might look into an emulator one day.. but I don't think I'm that hardcore gamer you know haha. I have enough dvd music players about for all that stuff. =)

you need a small electronics screwdrive with a security bit to open the cartridge. for zelda i had to solder a new battery holder to the board to hold a new cr2032 lithium battery. then it would hold saves again, and it should be good for another 15 or 20 years. since most cartridges are so old now, you could have a save and then lose all progress. i lost my progress like 3 times on zelda and i was really far too. i've beaten it before but it was a long time ago. playing zelda: a link to the past on higan
Some people like Starfox for a flying game but I found that hard as fuck on SNES. You should get Tecmo Super Bowl III, the first one is classic too, but the gameplay is a bit better and you can make your own team in the 3rd one.
