Some of the later editions on Minder tickled me. Some of the autobiographical books by Clive James , where he blended hyperbole with flowery writing are most entertaining.
While on the topic of "insane" Brit comedy, I truly recommend "SPIKE MILLIGAN: THE FAMILY ALBUM" (written by Spike himself) Here was a "comic" whose own brand of "humor" was indeed insane, irreverent, off-the-wall, hysterically funny, and light-years ahead of its time. Sadly, Spike was (literally) shell-shocked during WW2; he had numerous breakdowns over the years, and has, himself, said, that the reason his humour was so insane was because he, himself, was insane! Many have regarded him as the true "Father of Modern British Comedy". During his halcyon days as one of the "Goons", he quickly became a household name, and went on to forge close friendships with many famous people, including the Prince of Wales. Too, we should remember that Spike's innovated "Q" series on "telly" inspired countless young comedians. He appeared in many movies and plays, and penned a number of books and manuscripts, poems, and, yes, even children's stories. If many regard British comedy to be a bit on the "wild side", then, without a doubt, Spike blazed many new trails in the field, paving the way for future Brit comedians to forge ahead with their own unique comedic styles...... Here's to Spike....... Spike Milligan - Wikipedia (note that, sadly, Spike was a manic-depressive; much here on this page, also, about his insanity-filled days as a "Goon")
Some years ago I saw a stage play based in the autobiographical book Surviving Spike by Norma Fernes.
Did not know about this book; I'm going to try to get myself a copy. As a long-time fan of "The Goons" (and Spike) this sounds like a great read.......thanks for the info! :Live long and prosper"
