There's Hope Yet (From the Ancient Perspective)...

    There's hope yet.

    They used to say that the ancient Romans did things with brutal efficiency. And that mercy and kindness were seen as a sign of weakness.

    But even the ancient Romans had at least three words for mercy misericordia, clementia and mansuetudo. And the sentiment is further reinforced in many other ancient words and phrases.

    i don't call rome ancient. there were civilizations in both hemispheres thousands of years before that, and before long lasting contact between them.
