I'm not talking about Philosophy Forum "What Does God Mean?" type of pseudo-intellectual drivel.

I'm talking about everyday discussions... hell, you can have a good, intelligent, discussion about making a sandwich if people wouldn't start bullshiting. Call me a purist, but I believe that a thread should at least somewhat stay on topic, or at least flow like a conversation. Having two people take it over and flirt for a page makes it awfully anoyying to read and kills the conversation.

I really like to go to this place to escape life a tad, and it's really frustrating to click in a thread, read a bit, and then just stumble upon some comepletely unrelated shit. Worst thing is that only a few people do this, but those few are enough to actually ruin a good thing.

disclaimer: ive only read the first page and this page

but seriously, when HASNT RT been sex obsessed and turned every thread it could into a dirty joke?

but i do second the motion that youtube does not count as a credible source in an dof itself. it may host a few videos that arent crap, but, uh, itd be a lot better to hunt them down from a far more reliable source

oh, and yeah, its obnoxious when two people hijack a thread to talk about crap that should be put into pms. that is genuinely obnoxious..

i have to say i agree here; it's not at all unusual to see 2 or 3 different conversations going on in one thread at the same time, and it's not that much extra work to distinguish yours from the others...

Dont make yourself out to be such a victim over such a none issue. And exactly you use the forums to escape real life? exactly my point. Hence alot of mindlessness. Just ignore it.

Actually, I know I'm one of the people guilty of what Rubin's saying, and I'm trying to quit it. (I know, it doesn't look like I'm trying very hard, but I am!) Sorry, bud. Maybe we should just start a "Permanent Flirt" thread and try to redirect everything to that.

This thread is very scattered indeed... which is why I didn't bother posting in it until I saw Cate's statement which supported mindless posting...

But we did have a really good conspiracy thread a day or two ago, and I actually learned alot. Some of the topics in this forum leave me thinking about them even after I get off the computer. Not a lot of places on the internet can achieve that.

One thing I love about Hipforums is how conversations tend to flow naturally onto new subjects and encompass new ideas, but I have to agree with Pavel about one point.

When two or three people start going on about something personal that other people can't relate to, it tends to kill a thread for everyone else.

I think it's fine to branch off onto other stuff, but if you notice it getting too personal have respect and pop it over to PMs instead.

The problem is, CT's get off by simply asserting something over and over again as if it's fact, and then yell louder then anyone in the conversation. Burying any facts they might present which can be reviewed admist pages and pages of conjecture.

It's asinine. Conspiracy theories are like cheap intellectual porn.

I'm not really trying to make a big deal out of this... it's just honestly mildly annoying, and it really does make the people who do it seem like complete and total idiots.

Especially when all people muster to say is "OMG!" "Hahahaha :D" or ";)" in a single post. You'd think people would have more content than that. Maybe I just have higher standards for you people than I do for the rest of humanity. I'm addicted to this forum, so I'm kinda stuck with you.

More to discuss than to escape... I like how the forums stimulate my brain, challange me to think... but there is an aspect of escape to it.

It's hard for me to ignore mindlessness though. In real life, I just don't associate with such people, keep the stupid out of my life. In here, it's forced upon me... and stupidity simply pisses me off, I can't help it.

Yes it's true...that I'm happy to be stuck with you!
But I can see...that you're happy to be stuck with me!

But seriously, what DOES God mean?

    ...crap, I'm doing it again.

Duck got it. Some stuff belongs in PMs. Keep your damn flirting private, have some respect for the people who are actually trying to keep a discussion going.

I agree with you, but Matt is a special case. He's awfully intelligent, knows his shit, and has an amazing degree of patience as he explains and explains and explains. I find it easier to admire Matt than most people on this forum, simply because of his honest determination and nobel cause. It's not like he's gaining something from being a CT, he's actually trying to educate people.

Yeah but he's wrong. If I spent all my time intelligently trying to convince everyone that turtles can fly, it'd still kinda be a waste of time, wouldn't it?

p.s. I don't actually know who Matt is.

I agree that he's smart, but I find all his claims to be spurious, and I find them to be very distracting from legitamate discussion.

Much much more so then the grab ass that goes on around here.

I tend to disregard a lot of what he says (usually not without researching it or prior knowledge of some sort, of course). I take him as a bit dramatic and fanciful as most CT are, but as far as this 9/11 thing goes, he was definitely a factor in opening my eyes.

I'm not claiming to know much more about it than anyone else, but since the shock and awe has worn off for me, and I put some thought into it and researched it, there is no way in hell planes brought those towers down.
