ive seen lots of movies and read lots of books about the subject: a western guy goes to an eastern country (generally before modern era) the guy is an ordinary guy, lives lots of adventures and meets important people of the country and becomes and important man. this happens in % 99 of the movies or novels, which the character goes to the east. for example, kingdom of heaven.. the guy is an ordinary blacksmith, goes to jerusalem, meets with salahaddin, and talks to him. finally, he becomes the defender of jerusalem and be a hero. i like some of this kind: the last samurai and 7 years of tibet. these two made me cry.. some are good, same are ordinary movies.. but the general concept is the same: goes to est, meets the "big" men, becomes an important man.. so, if you write a novel like this one day, dont let your character become a great man or a hero...
