it needs to be said out what this film was -- an utterly failed attempt by a director who can be considered an industry professional. there was not a single believable second to this film. i didn't buy it that Dicaprio made all that money in 5 years, i didn't buy him being on ten different drugs on a daily basis, i didn't buy the senseless porn that was only used to get some entertainment value. there was not a single sympathetic character in the whole three hours. it was a three-hour long circus show that kept throwing out every next distraction (money, pussy, cars, blowjobs, luxury yachts, gigantic orgies that leave everyone with gonorrhea, etc) to its audience begging them to keep their attention (its level of boredom was pretty much constant throughout the whole three hours though with one significant exception). it was pathetic. the whole film. that's how i'd sum it up -- The Wolf of Wall Street was an utterly pathetic, pitiful film. the notable exception to the failed film-making was one scene, the one where Dicaprio was on 15 years old quaaludes. that was a funny scene. one worth keeping and watching again from time to time. it has a decent entertainment value. it lasted about 10 minutes though. besides that. the whole movie is a titanic gape of emptiness. failed. F.
Um. It's a true story. And the characters aren't supposed to be sympathetic (except the first wife, who is). It's about how decadent and wasteful Wall Street.
I just saw this movie. I found it long and over the top....quite over the top, but the message was still there. I said to my buddy, after the movie went on and on for an eternity, it seemed....in a quiet voice...as I have a quiet voice, IRL..."Boy, this is getting to be too long..."...and some older lady behind me hits me on my broken shoulder and shhhhhh's me. REALLY!? I did not say a word seeing that she was older, but I fumed the rest of the movie.
That's fucked. I saw it New Year's Day and the theater was packed, and everyone was so loud during the previews, but there wasn't a sound during the movie- it was weird.
yeah, but even that wasn't believable. because i didn't believe these characters pulled off being on Wall Street in the first place. i mean, i didn't buy the acting or the cast or the script. there was no substance behind any of these. and thus in the end the appeal to decadent quality also got lost on me. i only saw it as failed film-making.
I saw the book of the same title in Barnes & Noble when I was there last weekend browsing the business books...
I haven't seen it. It may have failed as a movie, but those fuckers on wall st made out like the bandits they are, for sure. I'll see it when it comes to our 2 dollar movie theater here. Maybe. Probably piss me off too much to sit through it.
Yeah, the message was definitely there...the ruthlessness of it all. You either F or get f by someone was the clear message, and I do like DiCaprio.....
i like DiCaprio and drugs. but either failed to impress in this film. it wasn't even a good junkie film. it was all just taken too far to still retain credibility.... though the quaalude scene was damn funny.
I saw the previews to this movie, and I read briefly about it. It seems like it's another one of those movies that kind of glosses over the truth, focusing on the facade of Wall Street instead of the heart of the banking system itself. There is a lot of talk these days about corporate greed, but little talk about the whole root of the problem which lies with the very way that money comes into existence in the first place. Wall Street, as people have come to know it, is more a symptom of the problem than the cause. Many people will come out of watching this movie with not an inkling of what fractional reserve banking is, or the shadowy means by which the Federal Reserve prints our money, which has allowed the corruption we see on Wall Street to happen in the first place.
They don't even get into the heart of Wall Street or what Belmont was doing. In the narration he says things like "but you don't care about the details", "forget the specifics, this means we were getting filthy fucking rich".
I totally agree with the OP. It is overlong self indulgent bullshit. I cannot believe I sat through it all. Well, I had to in order to see him get righteously nailed. That was all I cared about. Stupid film. It should have been at least an hour shorter. Take out all the orgy scenes. They can be implied okay, we dont need to keep seeing it. The only bit I enjoyed was the Ludes OD scene. That was funny.
The script was based on a book written by the tossbag the story was about. No reason to expect the truth. I'm more likely to listen to your opinion on this movie than pretty much any critic in the media, who all seem to be Scorcese nuthuggers, wet themselves every time Scorcese makes a picture or Day Lewis stars in one. I love Taxi Driver, but thats more about Deniro and Foster, I like many others really love The Departed but that was about DiCaprio and surprisingly Wahlberg. Scorcese has never won the oscar for director cos he's never pulled anything out of that hat that relied on him rather than an A list cast or someone elses really good script. The role of the director is overinflated anyway, but Scorcese's hit and miss ratio is rather poor Belfort himself made his money in penny stocks, he was never one of the big kahunas on Wall street anyway
What's so hard to believe?... It is based on a true story about Jordan Belfort's life.. most of the stuff in the film actually happened in real life. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I don't believe it quite lived up to some of the expectations my friends had bestowed upon me, but none the less..it was an enjoyable film. Dicaprio's speeches on the mic really made most of the film for me. It really let Dicaprio go wild and utilize some of his great acting abilities... as well as drive home some of the main point's and theme of the film. I still wanna see American Hustle tho...some of my friends said they enjoyed it more than TWOWS. :2thumbsup:
Agree with you 100%% here....especially about the orgy BS....Things are more sexy to me when not blatant. The in my face about it always gets much.
