There will always be teens who relate better to older music than new pop music and some of them will form bands that are I influenced by older rock bands. Those bands may not make it on top 40 radio but they dont need to, thanks to the internet. They'll still find fans I dont really see rock music ever completely disappearing
Yeah, the reason I named some 60s and 70s rock is because yes, they're among the greatest but also because they're from a time when everyone did take notice of them. That and when they peaked it was real original. But plenty of new bands can and will rock your tits on your back. They're just not as big as the classics were in their day.
I enjoy both, if I were pressed to only listen to one it would be The Who but if I were asked to make a compilation, which didn't feature any songs from their respective pinnacle albums of Who's Next and The Joshua Tree, I think I'd have a easier time making a U2 Greatest Hits. This is a roundabout way of saying I think U2 was more consistent. I feel like Keith Moon's frantic drumming is the highlight of The Who as where The Edge's textured guitar style highlights U2. The Edge's style has had a more lasting impact imo (I play guitar not drums though so there is potential bias here) and I don't think it was anywhere near exhausted. That arpeggiated, effects laden style of The Edge was quite innovative and unique.
Aww man. Woo!! I can't believe it. I have to say for sure U2, but I am an obviously biased input because I am a product of the MTV generation in which U2 were a major feature; at least that's the impression I got anyway. Then again, I never had cable personally. I just knew people who did.
U2 is a more modern version of the Wall of Sound, while the Who had much more variety and their music was more psychedelic.
I'll never forget what Ginger Baker said about Keith Moon's drumming "he had technique, but he couldn't swing a sack of shit" Haha
I can remember when MTV was fairly decent, in the '80s. Then it went to hell. They used to have a segment late at night called The Basement Tapes, or something like that, where they would play alternative stuff.
THE WHO. I just bought live at isle of wight DVD and it's just a shame the mixing means you can barely hear the bass.
For me it’s The Who! I grew up listening to along it their songs and I really like them! U2 is a great band, but in all honesty I don’t know how you would compare these bands- their style of music is totally different to me. ~By the way, WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU, MAC??!!
