Okay, I just saw the Happy Together Tour a couple days ago, here's my report. It was billed as The Spencer Davis Group, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, Mark Lindsey of Paul Revere and the Raiders, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, The Cowsills, and Flo and Eddie of the Turtles. So it started with Billy J. Kramer. Apparently something happened to Spencer Davis as he has missed a couple shows. Spencer Davis was my real reason for going. I have already seen him once, but I wanted to see him again. Bummer. Kramer was okay. He did a couple hits he had like Little Children. But the sound system really sucked big time. They all were using union musicians, I guess, and these guys had no enthusiasm at all. Plus the sound system really sucked...but I said that already. Then the Cowsills came out. The Cowsills were the inspiration for the Brady Bunch TV show, if you remember that. They consisted of five brothers a sister and their mother, in their prime, but all they managed to stage at this show was two brothers and a sister...so that hurt their harmonies. I thought they were the best part of the show. They did The Rain the Park and Other Things, Indian Lake, Hair, and something else. Then Mark Lindsey came out and did Kicks, which sounded terrible and some other stuff. Chuck Negron did Shambala, One, and a couple others. Then Flo and Eddie came out. Mark Volman (Flo) looked bad. I immediately thought "Marl Volman looks bad". His big black afro was gone and it looked like he lost 100 pounds. Turned out he had cancer a little while ago and seems to have beat it so that was good. Then they wheeled Howard Kaylan (Eddie) out in a wheelchair! They never said why he was in a wheelchair but his right foot was all bandaged up and he hobbled over to a chair and kept it elevated all night (his foot that is) so I assume he had some kind of surgery. Kaylan still sounded good and they did their standard Turtles stuff, Elenore, It Ain't Me Babe, and some other stuff. Flo was dancing around as usual and Eddie was making jokes about how old they were, etc. They even did a little vocal section from when they were with Frank Zappa and the Mothers as the lead guitar player tried to sound like Zappa...he didn't. So that was the third time I'd seen them, twice as The Turtles and once with Zappa. All in all I was rather disappointed largely due to the terrible sound system. Stay tuned for a review of Paul McCarthy.
