here from this link you can read the rest of the texts which i pasted beneath... http://www.questiononislam.com/subpage.php?s=cat_open&cid=22 Category : Sufism and Tariqah Articles It is stated in the Quran: “It is in the remembrance of and whole-hearted devotion to God that hearts find rest and contentment.” What is meant here with ‘remembrance’? How does it content the heart? The Lord of the heart informs us that it is through the remembrance of God that hearts find rest and contentment. What is remembrance? Every event, sign and work of knowledge is each a cause for remembrance. The heart is contented only with knowing that this Universe, which is a factory, a palace and a guesthouse, is existent only with the command and will of God. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What does ‘Rabita’ mean? Here we use ‘Rabita’ in the meanings of ‘contact, attachment, bond, connection, attention, relation, being the member of…’ It is performed by leaving one’s personality aside and uniting with the personality of, for example, sheik or Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and establishing a connection with him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is suffering in terms of Sufism? The way of Sufism passes through suffering. Crude iron cannot be forged without fire. Just like that, it is not possible to purify a self without suffering. The palace of bliss is reached through the way of suffering. The term ‘suffering’ in Sufism is a Persian word meaning ‘forty days’ and is derived from the event of Prophet Moses (upon whom be peace) staying in Mount Sinai in a state of asceticism for forty days in order to receive the Torah. (Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stayed in Mount Hira before his prophethood, which is also an inspiration for the term.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is love in terms of Sufism? Love is the name of intense liking. In Sufism, it is used in the meaning of affection toward God. Man uses ‘love’ in either figurative or real meaning. Love in figurative meaning is to be attached to mortals. On the other hand, love in real meaning is to love God. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Tasawwuf (Sufism)? The main features of Islam are composed of faith, worship, and morality. The branch of speech handles faith, the canon law handles worship, and Sufism handles morality. Sufism is to live Islam profoundly. It is the harvest of a sensing pertaining to spirit and conscience. To pass to the core from the form, to reach the seed from the shell, the word’s coming true. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the purpose of Tasawwuf? Tasawwuf is an effective way through achieving the aims that Islam heralds. We could list some of these aims as; having the morality of God’s (1) that is to say, one’s fulfilling his/her heart and soul with the attributes, which God allows. Divine morality is the morality of Qur’an in shortest statement. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is “Tariqah?” Tariqah literally means path but in Islamic etymology, it means the path of achieving the knowledge of Tasawwuf (mystic tradition within Islam). The tariqah paths are the ways of reality. The tariqah paths are the proofs, and the sources of ‘Kawthar’, which distributes a sort of water of life. Many believers for centuries have drunk from this source and have benefited from this supreme treasury. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In tasawwuf, it is strongly emphasized that one should ignore and abandon worldly things. What do you think how we should interpret the world? One of the most significant principles of ‘tasawwuf’ is abandoning the world. It is quite certain that this abundance should not be in terms of work but hearth. Human beings who have both materialistic and spiritual sides should not be hooked on materialism, for materialism can solely be a slave to spirituality. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What does “ilm-i ladun” mean? Apart from senses, mind and experience, ‘Sufis’ (Muslim mystics) embrace “ilm-i ladun” as well. “Ilm-i ladun” is the knowledge imparted by God through illumination. The name “ladun” was inspired by the verse, which is about Hazrath Hýzýr’s Knowledge. (Al-Kahf Surah, 18:65). Such knowledge is quite important. This knowledge highlights the details of events. It is a kind of ‘gayb’ (unseen) or secret knowledge. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Could you define ‘sheikh” and “murid” according to tasawwuf? “Sheikh” is a guide and ‘arif’ (the mature human being who has attained true knowledge of God’s affection) person and a “murid” is a person who is a student of a sheikh. Sheikh, in other words ‘Murshid’ (master) is a guide who helps people to abandon public things and arrive at the ‘haqq’ (divine and absolute truth). Sheikh is an instructor in ‘dargah’ (the place where murids gather) just like a teacher at school. While the teacher is predominantly interested in mind, the murshid is engrossed in spirit. The face of the murshid is blessed, and his words are godly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What does “sayr-u suluk” (journeying and initiation) mean? “Sayr-u suluk” means the special training of a religious precept in tasawwuf. A person cannot be a scholar without education, and one cannot be an itinerant without traveling from place to place. Likewise, one cannot advance in tasawwuf without struggle and meditation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What does “dhikr” mean? Dhikr means remembering and commemorating God. It is a clear and explicit order of the Noble Qur’an. Two of the verses of the Holy Qur’an pertainig to dhikr are: “So (in return for all that) always remember and make mention of Me (when service to Me is due), that I may remember and make mention of you (when judgment and recompense are due); and give thanks to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me.” “O you who believe! When you meet a host in battle, stand firm and remember and mention God much, that you may triumph.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- here from this link you can read the whole explanations of the questions. http://www.questiononislam.com/subpage.php?s=cat_open&cid=22
