    Do you think the Stooges were just a sloppy artless garage-rock band, or an avant-garde garage-rock band, like a somewhat more brutal form of Velvet's circa '68?

    I happen to like them. I wouldn't say they were as good as the Velvets, but as far as garage rock goes, I think they were pretty good.

    Heh, it's funny you should mention that, seeing as John Cale produced their first album.

    Yeah, I know he did. I love the Stooges, but I prefer the Velvets as well.

    i love the stooges, but i think their music is closer to seventies punk than to sixties garage... their albums were way ahead of their time, they were the first real punk band.

    I would not call them artless, I'd say their music captures the true spirit of Detroit.

    i totally agree that they were the first punk band...saw them, most of them anyway, last summer....still pretty energetic.
