I doubt Americans of the past would have been terrified enough of the SS to run away. They were more powerful over defenseless people. It's too bad that Germany has so much to be ashamed of. I hope the German people outlive it, because I truly do not believe that Nazism and fascism are what they are actually all about on the inside. WWII came after so much strife and so much ignorance and, frankly, quack science.

Last night's boomer bashing in the corona thread for one...

 

I briefly looked that over this morning. I didnt understand how the thread ended up there. I see a lot of generations bashing each other. I'm guilty of it too but only when the other "side" fires 1st. Truthfully wish this generational war would just stop. In mybtime here I've noticed most the folks I interact with are older than me and we all get along fine. I think this Millennials vs Boomer thing is more manufactured than organic. We should all just stop playing the game

 

It's funny how Gen X are the cool ones, and boomers and millennials fight among themselves, both trying not to suck so hard. I don't know what to say...both sides are just kind of status quo.

 

Yeah when a culture is 1000s of years old but the worst thing they ever did is still in the memory of people living today, they get know for that and that alone. I'm fascinated by WW2 and could talk at great lengths about certain aspects of it, but I'm torn cuz I feel like we should remember it but also as long as it is remembered Germany and Japan are the "bad guys" forever. Some of what they did during the war was atrocious and I dont excuse it, but it also doesnt define their culture or nations. Also, the US did plenty of shady things at the time that no one wants to talk about

 

I feel like many Germans are going to develop a thing for Nazism as a defense mechanism against being told they should be ashamed so much.

Yeah, the US has plenty to be ashamed of as well, but the winners write the history books.

 

A common perception but one i disagree with. I think they're written by the people who want to be storytellers. Every country has their version of what happened. The average Japanese knows next to nothing about WW2 other than it was a fight between Japan and the US and the US bombed them. That's literally all they know. They dont know about expansionism, imperial Japan, and sure as hell aren't being taught about the rape of Nanking.

It's all done out of shame and embarrassment. They're being taught a sanitized version of their history. And I understand why (same thing happens in the US. Virtually no difference between the trail of Tears and the bataan death march except that Andrew jackson is on our money) but at the same time, generations of people are growing up not knowing the real history. And as the saying goes those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it (or something... I'm paraphrasing but you get the point)

And yeah, the generational war thing is stupid as hell. Don't people see? This narrative of "the people are divided" is being pushed all over the world, over various things.

 

My university just moved all classes online.

 

My Grandpa said it was the worst thing he ever smelled when he got dropped in Europe for the War and had to go through the streets with bodies strewn about.

 

me too. I'm stoked because we'll be healthier/safer, but they said final exams will move ahead as scheduled. I don't know if that means online or if it means 'in-person' as usual. =-s

 

I'm a grad student so I only have one class anyway, but my thesis involves interviews with a lot of people who are Hep-C and hiv positive, so I'll probably be behind on that. Oh well.

 

& of course there will be (hopefully...) flexibility for that.
