i wouldnt let my neighbors walk my dog but if i did i'd be giving them my lead.

leads are a big tool in dog behavior. I have 3 leads and 3 chains for specific purposes.

my slip chain lead is your typical slip chain / choke chain on a nice sterdy lead, dog knows when wearing this obedience is a key factor. He can feel each slip of the chain and knows when he is about to overstep his boundaries.

his show collar is just a loose harness, he knows he can pull hard with this, there is little resistance. he also knows when he wear this that it is more of a "fun situation" collar, lots of activities, so his behavior changes from the slip chain.

the pinch collar, this is the don't fuck me with me today collar. it purpose to is to pinch his neck in about 8 places if he pulls too hard. people don't like them, but i think they're almost a necessity if you have an over active powerful anxious dog like mine. he start acting up, pull the chain, pinch the neck he won't be acting up for long.

SO theoretically speaking, if someone tried to walk my dog at least with a harness i would say no. If my dog realises there is no resistance when walking with a new person, you're getting dragged all over the place lol. I don't believe in harnesses for german shepherds.

My point being, my dog doesn't know somebody elses lead and he's not silly, he will notice the difference. you might get away with it with a small fluffy dog or whatever, but when you're working with proper working dogs that have been trained with specific tools and commands, as innocent as a lead might seem, it might be a big factor in its social behavior while walking.

 

Julie is a leader dog, she's meant to be out front, she doesn't pull for the most part. Once her excitement is over, then she much listens to halt. She has a collar, no harness.

 

I only use a harness when he's in the truck tray on a very short leash so he cant jump over and hang himself.
