The River So Deep In the middle of the night, I go walking in my sleep, From the mountains of faith, To a river so deep! I must be looking for something, Something sacred that I lost, Something somebody stole! Something I'd never lose! But, the river is wide, And it's too hard to cross, Then, I woke up wet. In the middle of the... In the middle of the... In the middle of the... River so... deep... (Billy Joel)
This is another great example of a poem extrapolated from the Tao Te Ching, but I never made the connection before to Billy Joel's song. His song attracted me because of its vague minimalistic metaphors, but this particular poem is one that writers commonly have difficulty with communicating well in a more minimalistic poem. This one is perfect for my collection. It gets the point across that shit happens, we all sometimes embarrass ourselves in even predictable ways, and you deal with it because we are all merely human, while the poem also encourages the individual to embrace a sense of humor about themselves.
