Do you think Hindus are washed in milk? Or Christians? Or any of these traditions? The violent and the peaceful are everywhere. What the fundamentalists have embraced is not the true Islam. Islam is the faith that produced Jalaluddin Rumi, Hafiz, Moinuddin Hasan Chishti, Sanai, Shabistari, Kabir, Francis Brabazon, Zeynep Hatun... the list is endless. Where there is good is also bad, but why look at the worst in others and see the best in your own? Would it not help you grow to partake of the best of others and be aware of the worst in your own?
I agree. Islam is beautiful religion. We watched a video series on World Religions and the one on Islam is especially beautiful... when people point out always all the bad things they see in Islam ..I find it so sad that they miss the beauty that is also there. One Islamic woman came to speak for our women's group and she was telling us why Muslim's protrate when they pray... because it is putting your heart above your mind...and offering your heart to God.
I can see that...but if you look at it deeply...it could also be putting your true Self above your ego.
It could I suppose. I actually like the way some Buddhists refer to the 'heart-mind' as one entity. Anyway, I'll say no more on Islam.
Another example of how all of us, self included, find fault instinctively with anything outside our own ken.
I don't understand your meaning here. If you mean this woman's statement is 'beyond my ken' I have to disabuse you of that idea. I know well what she means to say, but I don't agree with it . It is obvious that if you say there is one unified thing called 'heart-mind', it is then useless to make a distinction and say it is good to place one half of this single entity above another. Even if you think heart and mind are different, it is better to maintain the two in equilibrium and balance than to extoll one over the other.
Actually, Christianity incorporated a lot of Pagan stuff as it spread through Europe. Often, churches were built on what had been sacred sites to the pre-christians. The symbolism of the Roman Empire and it's religion was incorporated into Catholic symbolism in amny ways. In the Uk, many old churches have stone carvings which are known to be representations of old Pagn deities and spirits. Some argue that Christianity itself is merely a re-telling of the ancient Egyptian myth of Osiris. Far from being 'the same religion', Christianity and Islam are entirely different in many respects.
And where have the hindus persecuted the bahais, the jews, the zoroastrians , the buddhists, the sikhs, the jains, the christians, the assyrians like the islamic terrorists did ? What you are speaking of is sufism, and even the sufis were persecuted by the islamic terrorists on the grounds that they are not true muslims. A sufi enlightened master , Masood I belive( I don't recollect his name), after attaining enlightenment , understood the unity of God and stated, " I am Allah" similar to the upanishadic verse Aham Bhramasmi " I am He" . Unfortunately , the islamic clerics condemned it as blashphemy and beheaded him. Many other sufis were killed as well and persecuted for their beliefs by islamic terrorists. See the good in others, that is important and is emphasized by Vivekananda himself. However that does not mean that one should be blind to the evil. Otherwise it will be repeated again and again. And this is why Krishna exhorted Arjuna to fight against injustice and unrighteousness in the Bhagavad Gita.
Persecution of the Bahais by Islamic fundamentalists Numerous atrocities were committed on the Bahais themselves by Islamic fanatics, supported by the Islamic government itself. (from the wikipedia) As the result of the Báb's execution in 1850 by a firing squad in Tabriz, an assassination attempt was instigated on the King of Persia, Nasser-al-Din Shah, two years later by a handful of angry Bábís. Although the assassins claimed they were working alone, the entire Bábí community was blamed, and a slaughter of several thousand Bábís followed. Many of the Bábís who were not killed, including Bahá'u'lláh, were imprisoned in the Síyáh-Chál (Black Pit), an underground dungeon of Tehran. Bahá'u'lláh himself was found to be innocent of complicity in the assassination plot, but remained in the Síyáh-Chál over four months. An Austrian officer, Captain von Goumoens, working in the court of the Shah at the time, gave the following account after signing his resignation: "[I saw] ones who, with gouged-out eyes, must eat, on the scene of the deed, their own amputated ears; or whose teeth are torn out with inhuman violence by the hand of the executioner; or whose bare skulls are simply crushed by blows from a hammer..." "As for the end itself, they hang the scorched and perforated bodies by their hands and feet to a tree head downwards, and now every Persian may try his marksmanship to his heart’s content... When I read over again, what I have written, I am overcome by the thought that those who are with you in our dearly beloved Austria may doubt the full truth of the picture, and accuse me of exaggeration. Would to God that I had not lived to see it!... At present I never leave my house, in order not to meet with fresh scenes of horror... I will no longer maintain my connection with the scene of such crimes.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_Bah%C3%A1'%C3%ADs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bah%C3%A1%27u%27ll%C3%A1h
Persecution of the Assyrians by Islamic fundamentalists The Assyrian Christians were exterminated almost to the point of extinction by the Turks and their women outraged by them. The Assyrian genocide perpetrated by Turkish forces under the regime of the Young Turks are well-known. One of the few that survived was Reverian John Esho. After escaping, he stated: You have undoubtedly heard of the Assyrian massacre of Khoi, but I am certain you do not know the details." These Assyrians were assembled into one caravansary, and shot to death by guns and revolvers. Blood literally flowed in little streams, and the entire open space within the caravansary became a pool of crimson liquid. The place was too small to hold all the living victims waiting for execution. They were brought in groups, and each new group was compelled to stand over the heap of the still bleeding bodies and shot to death. The fearful place became literally a human slaughter house, receiving its speechless victims, in groups of ten and twenty at a time, for execution. At the same time, the Assyrians, who were residing in the suburb of the city, were brought together and driven into the spacious courtyard of a house [...] The Assyrian refugees were kept under guard for eight days, without anything to eat. At last they were removed from their place of confinement and taken to a spot prepared for their brutal killing. These helpless Assyrians marched like lambs to their slaughter, and they opened not their mouth, save by sayings "Lord, into thy hands we commit our spirits. [...] The executioners began by cutting first the fingers of their victims, join by joint, till the two hands were entirely amputated. Then they were stretched on the ground, after the manner of the animals that are slain in the Fast, but these with their faces turned upward, and their heads resting upon the stones or blocks of wood Then their throats were half cut, so as to prolong their torture of dying, and while struggling in the agony of death, the victims were kicked and clubbed by heavy poles the murderers carried Many of them, while still laboring under the pain of death, were thrown into ditches and buried before their souls had expired. The young men and the able-bodied men were separated from among the very young and the old. They were taken some distance from the city and used as targets by the shooters. They all fell, a few not mortally wounded. One of the leaders went to the heaps of the fallen and shouted aloud, swearing by the names of Islam's prophets that those who had not received mortal wounds should rise and depart, as they would not be harmed any more. A few, thus deceived, stood up, but only to fall this time killed by another volley from the guns of the murderers. Some of the younger and good looking women, together with a few little girls of attractive appearance, pleaded to be killed. Against their will were forced into Islam's harems. Others were subjected to such fiendish insults that I cannot possibly describe. Death, however, came to their rescue and saved them from the vile passions of the demons. The death toll of Assyrians totaled 2,770 men, women and children. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assyrian_Genocide
Islamic persecution of the Sikhs In India, Muslim fundamentalists tortured the Sikh Gurus and their families exactly as prescribed by the Koran. For example, the Sikh guru Tegh Bahadur was imprisoned in a cage like a wild animal, when he refused to forsake his religion for Islam. Three of his disciples were murdered in front of his eyes. One of them was Bhai Mati Das. He was sawed alive into little pieces. The other was wrapped up in cotton and burnt alive. Bhai Dyala, the third one, was boiled alive in a cauldron. Guru Tegh Bahadur himself was brutally tortured and killed in a similar fashion. All this is documented facts, and this is the reason why the Khalsa , the organised military wing of Sikhism was formed , in order to prevent Islamic terrorism and to protect innocent sikhs and hindus and prevent the outrage of ladies by islamic fanatics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru_Teg_Bahadur http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru_Gobind_Singh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalsa
Islamic persecution of the Zoroastrians The Zoroastrian nation and civilization was destroyed by the Islamic fundamentalists in the 7th century A.D. and their temples were destroyed as well. Many Zoroastrians escaping islamic terrorism and persecution, fled to India , where they were given refuge and full freedom of worship by the Hindus.Hence we have a thriving Zoroastrian population in India with their own temples , heritage , culture and religion intact. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecu...f_Zoroastrians
Islamic persecution of the Hindus In Bangladesh Bangladesh was a part of India before the Muslim terrorists led by Mohammed Ali Jinnah separated it from India in 1947. It was then called East Pakistan. Jinnah lied to the thirteen million Hindus, Buddhists and Christians in East Pakistan and told them that they would not be persecuted against. He promised that they would be given full freedom under the Islamic rule. However, these religious minorities—especially the Hindus and the Buddhists have been tortured, raped and murdered by the Muslim terrorists ever since 1947. Over 2.5 million Hindus alone were slaughtered during the Pakistan-Bangladesh war in 1971. The types of crimes committed were in accordance with the torture verses in the Koran. Robert E. Burns, the author of Wrath of Allah states, "The mutilation was disgusting—eyes gouged out, pregnant women disemboweled, male genitals cut off, women’s breasts cut off….." The persecution of "unbelievers" in the name of Allah , continues even today in Bangladesh under the Islamic rule. For example, Taslima Nasreen, the author of Lajja was given a death sentence for just stating the facts and speaking against the inhumane, cruel and barbaric nature of Islamic terrorism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Bangladesh_atrocities http://hinduhumanrights.org/Banglade...angladesh.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taslima_Nasrin
By ken, I meant Islam is outside your typical sphere of experience (and mine), but I might have been mistaken on that, if so I am sorry. This is essentially a semantic problem. It was a beautiful statement, poetry really, and to dissect poetry with semantic tools is like dissecting a rose. You may learn something, but the beauty is torn apart. But even on semantic terms, the heart in her statement would be the seat of transcendence, of love and compassion beyond all divisions and the mind the seat of logic and cerebration, discrimination and distinction. To place the heart above the mind then would be to place love and compassion over logic and compartmentalized thought processes. You may or may not agree. It doesn't matter. The rose has been sliced open.
Niranjan, we are all very much aware of these things, just as much as we are of the horrible things fanatic Hindu hardliners and Christian right-wingers do. There is no need to vomit out an avalanche of press clippings. I doubt very much oif any of us are going to bother reading them anyway. If you have something meaningful of your own to say, say it. Those who rely on the words of others to speak for themselves only demonstrate their own inability to think independently. Further your endless barrage of press clips does absolutely nothing to weaken my position, since I never denied that there are dangerous terrorist elements who label themselves Muslims. If you wished to disprove my point that there is good in Islam, then you would have to find such elements of hatred and violence in the poets and sages I referred to in my earlier post. And if you take the stand that Islam is bad because those who call themselves muslims do bad things, then there is not a single religion, not a single country, not a single individual being on the face of the Earth that you can call truly good.
And where have the hindus persecuted the assyrians, buddhists, jews, zoroastrians, bahais, jains and others. And since when have the sikh guru teg bahadurs assasination been a press clipping, fool. I don't need your idiotic lecture on how to present my views. I have already stated my independent thoughts in this matter, which you , living in a fools paradise, doesnt care to see. And these historical facts of islamic terrorism is put by me over here to substantiate Vivekanandas teachings. And where have I or Vivekananda stated that there is no good in Islam. Read the OP again. It is the superstitions which Vivekananda emphasizes. I have only stated through my posts that islamic fundamentalism and terrorism is evil , not Islam.
If that is so, fine, but why focus so much on that? It only feeds anger and hate and negative emotions in you. I feel very very very sorry for the terrorists, they are misguided, misinformed and miserable. Their suffering must be tremendous, multiplied by the results of their karma. They deserve great pity and compassion, and only when we approach that way can we end terrorism. Killing terrorists will only foster their rage and 10 will step in the shoes of every one killed.
Thought I might mention that Vivekananda's teachings stand alone, they dont need to be substantiated by your or anyone else.
