Sounds like a desos infection. We need nothing and we need not as well.

That is something that can and does take many forms.
Intent is the real determining factor. Intentions that are based in the well being of another even if at a cost to oneself.

Often I have seen those who do lots of good stuff, but there motivation is self-serving. I'm sure you know what I mean.
Again we are dealing with a nebulous concept that will take many shapes and forms.
Honesty with oneself about our intentions is the only way to know in one's self if we are acting in love or selfishness.

Desos creating music very well could be an act of selfless love for another. Only he will know in himself if it is or not.

In my opinion, because if there were some specific concrete thing that I could point too I would.

I just love how paradoxical life is in all it's many flavors:p

That is your perspective, and it's nice and all, and if you really live like that, more power to you. I don't. I'm fairly firmed rooted in the realm of duality, and choose to remain so.

This brings up an interesting philosophical conundrum I had difficulty with for a time. It only subsided after a long time of steadfastly ignoring it. The difficulty arising from the realization that only altruism would make me feel happy with myself. But that left me in a state of selfishly seeking altruism. And I found that if seeks to be altruistic for purely selfish reasons, it doesn't work.

This problem really drove me batty for a while, until I got distracted by other things, and looked back on it and found that it had resolved itself, all on it's own.

How do you measure an event?
It appears to me there are no firm roots in duality but a continual contest for ascendancy where any constituent may be displaced at any time. I think there is a little hot blood seeping into your brain pan.

I have no idea what you mean by this. Of course reality is in a constant state of flux, and new ideas gain ascendancy, each in turn. But within this, there is difficulty, there is pain. And most people have not achieved a state where they are indifferent to pleasure and pain, to abundance and want. Those who live in scarcity act from a place of fear. For me it seems any motion to alleviate scarcity reduces fear. People acting from fear seem more likely to act in manners that are hurtful, and perpetuate the state of fear in others.

Offering service to humanity increases trust, increases happiness. People who trust are in turn more willing to offer freely, for they do not fear that it will leave them wanting.

There is no pure duality, no us and them. But reality does have tones, colors, across many a spectrum. And I seek to assist and intensify those colors that I enjoy, and that I feel others will benfit from. Increasing happiness is, to me, a worthwhile ambition.

Edit: It seems to me that equanimity to all phenomena can also be an excuse to detach yourself from the suffering of others. An excuse to sit idle, in what comfort you have been given, and offer nothing to those for whom comfort is lacking.

Like not letting the right hand know what the left hand is doing.

I look at the issue of "altruism" in this way. The truth is we exist in this world for and with each other. Our needs are the same. My good and your good are not in conflict. I have nothing that I would withhold from anyone. We come into and leave the world empty handed, this observation is not a romantic notion.

We are energetic expression. The only thing that can be threatened are our illusions. The fundamental nature of our biological experience is sensational, consisting of a series of sensations, each followed by the other, some of which we call pleasant and some not so. This is a redundant quality of nature. Redundant from unda, like a wave. Transient sensation is the only "effect" of our being biological creature. There is no human edifice that transcends time.

We show ourselves deserving of loyalty whom we are loyal to. Giving demonstrates abundance. However, "offering service to humanity" is a speculative venture, In which my first priority would be to do no harm.

The spectrum is a radiant effect. Ambition is an expression of attraction.

Well if that is the way you construe it it would have to follow your edict.
The way I use it is to give all to all at every moment. Any cause is simply a limit on giving.

that's not what i was implying. just because i'm going to some music festivals this summer and don't particularly agree with your methodology doesn't mean i'm not making an effort for the greater good, or that i'm not going to be doing different things at different times, or havn't done so in the past, or that i'm not going to do so in the future, or even that spending time with people this summer isn't going to mean shit. honestly you just don't have enough information to be able to tell.

i think selfless service often confuses the selfless part with the service part. it seems like alot of people think that just because they are being selfless that it's all good. but really you have to take into account what it is you are contributing to and where your service is going.

Desos, could you be give more information on what the terms "selfless" and "service" mean to you. How do you measure what you are contributing and where your service is going?

well i guess, that i would consider it fairly futile to provide your service to something that is messed up as the result of something greater, but rather that your service should be directed at the core of the issue and what is causing the problems to begin with. not just constantly cleaning up messes that were created by some core issue. but rather to adress the core issue and then clean up the mess where it's needed.

the selfless part would imply that it was for the greater good. you can work for the greater good and just get caught up in circles if you don't tackle the core of the problem.

for example if you are constantly having to clean up messes and fix problems then you maybe ought to think: what is it that is making all these problems? why is it making so many problems?

then there is the other conundrum that smith stated about selfish selfless service, based around making yourself feel good because you think you've done your part.

i don't think that really the term selfless service even needs to be set apart from everyday life though. every aspects of your life can be brought back to this idea, even in the smallest areas.

How do you identify a "core issue"?
How do you identify the greater good?
How can you not, do your part?

Our hypothesis need to be testable to be useful. Desos, you are not offering any mutually verifiable metrics with your recipes for success. Terms like "selfless service", have no standard measure and are therefore not useful in transferring accurate information. We cannot make experiments nor can we measure results with the information you are providing.

    Scene:
*Desos and PB are walking down the street together enjoying each others company*
    *Desos notices a big steamy pile of dog shit on the sidewalk*;

    Desos:
"Damn PB, just look at that! Can you believe some people and how inconsiderate they can be, just letting their dog take a crap on the sidewalk!!!
What is wrong with them! Don't they know that the sidewalk is for everyone. Stuff like that is why America is going down the toilet, People in this country just don't get! Not to mention the city sanitation department! Where are they? Stupid bureaucratic idiots, don't they know that clean sidewalks are needed for everyone to enjoy peace and happiness?!
You know I'm going to tell everyone about this!
    CHANGE IS NEEDED!
    REVOLUTION!
I WILL NOT TOLERATE SHITTY SIDEWALKS!
You know what the problem is man, people have drifted too far from their true nature, that has to be the answer, otherwise dogs wouldn't shit on the sidewalk. I think every one should write music about the stench of shitty sidewalks and attend "NO SHIT" rallies."
    It's like..........

*As Desos is ranting and trying to get everyones attention about this travesty, PB quietly walks over to a nearby trash can, gets some old newspaper and walks over, picks up the still steamy pile (though not as steamed as Desos) and deposits it in the trash can*

    PB:
"Yeah Desos, it's a terrible thing I agree. Darn!, I got some crap on my finger, oh well, it washes off. At least the shit got picked up"

    END SCENE

    Moral of the story:
Any idiot can rant and rave about the mess things are in, unfortunatly not enough are willing to get shitty fingers.:D

lol, again, you really don't know what it is that i do irl. so really all that your saying is judgemental projecture. but i agree with what you're saying.

    the cause of the issue.

the end product of having gained a benefit as a whole, one that is lasting or gives way to more benefits.

things aren't that black and white. you can't say something like this is this and that's that. the personal factor always comes in and is always going to cause a difference in any measure of truth.
