The practice of spanking in the English speaking world

I would like to ask native English speakers about the practice of spanking in the English speaking world.

I am not a native English speaker and also my country (more or less) has different customs and practices and sometimes I am not absolutely sure how native English speakers understand and assume some words.
How a word is assumed depends on the exprerience with this word. For instance, in my country spanking is done by slapping someone (usually a child) as a punishment but it could be done on any part of the body, not only on the buttocks.

Regarding the USA, the UK and other English speaking countries, as far as I can judge by the spanking sites and blogs, spanking is done on the buttocks, but what about the real world? How is spanking done by average people in non erotic situations when they decide to punish someone, usually a child? Is it always on the buttocks or is it sometimes done on other part of the body? In your real life experience, have you heard of spanking being done on other part of the body?

Here is why I am asking this question:

Once a sexy American lady told me that she had been spanked by her mother. She was spanked even once when she was 19 years old because of a bad grade at school. She didn`t say on which part of the body she had been spanked, she only said that she had been spanked, and I felt awkward to ask her about it because our conversation was not in a sexual context.
It is very erotic to me of thinking of that lovely 19 year old young lady being spanked on her bottom but I am not absolutely sure if she meant exactly this because I don`t know how native English people assume the words "spank" and "spanking" in real life situations.

If she had said "I was spanked on the bottom" it would be clear enough for me but she said only "I was spanked".

If someone from my native country says "I was spanked" I will not be sure if he/she was spanked exactly on the bottom because in my country spanking is not strongly related to the bottom, it could be on any part of the body, for instance on the the thighs, on the hands or on the back of the neck.

When a native English speaker says "I was spanked" (whithout specifying on which part of the body), does he/she mean on the bottom or is it possible for him/her to mean some other parts of the body as well?

Referring to any person under the age of 18 in an adult context is considered an absolute NO-NO on most every website there is and many sites specifically state the same in their "Terms of Service Agreement. (ToSA)

 

It is not about about a person below 18 years of age. Please, read the text carefully. What I wrote is "It is very erotic to me of thinking of that lovely 19 year old young lady being spanked on her bottom" (because she said that she had been spanked by her mother at the age of 19). It is about a 19 year grown up young person and because the person in question is a grown up lady there are erotic overtones, but the whole question is more about traditional practices and understanding of the word "spanking".

 

I’d say 99% of the time they mean on the bottom. I have heard a few people call something a spanking when they weren’t talking about the bottom at all. I’d say that’s a misuse of the word though.

like the woman you spoke too I was also spanked as an adult by a parent and it was on the bottom. I’d say that’s rare but does happen.
