Now... I was just watching an older film - Reign of Fire - as I have been meaning to check it out ever since it was released back in 2002, I just never did. To be honest... I couldn't watch it beyond about halfway, if that. Why? Because... I get tired of how British people are portrayed in American stuff. We do not still live in castles and villages! >.< It was like all these Brits who looked like they were from the 16th century or something, and then the Americans came in all mega tough with tanks and acting ridiculously hardcore! And I have nothing against Americans looking tough of course, whatever I mean, some people are just tough. But it was so clear that the British were portrayed as REALLY old fashioned, and the Americans were just over the top hardcore. Do you guys get why this bugs me? I mean even at the start of the film, it looked like Britain during the industrial revolution, not anywhere even CLOSE to 2002! So... yeah O.O SO weird!
erm... not off-hand lol But it's definitely something I have been aware of in the past. Usually it's just playful though. It's just that in RoF it's soooo like... it feels so sincere! Ah well, I guess not every film can get it right
haha now I'm really curious to see what you think of it! I was watching it on Netflix, but yeah other than that if you want it in passable quality downloading it is probably the best way. I'm sure it's not a bad film it's just... the imbalance just made it intolerable for me!
calling a 2002 movie "an older film" makes me feel old. and i'm like your age. i actually remember commercials for this movie. it looked like shit from that, never needed to watch it to figure it out.
Ok, watched the first 20 minutes. It does show 'modern' Britain/London. Females foremans, too. They do move out to Northumberland: http://www.visitnorthumberland.com/ I presume to add some production values for very little money. They do drive around in Land Rovers. The American(s) have not arrived yet!
I was mostly ok with it up until the Americans started coming down in helicopters and stuff and talking about bringing down dragons while the Brits just sat their cowering and panicking!
I can see what the op is saying but I also would like other movies that are good examples. Reign of fire seems not a good example to me because indeed: ... and so the whole country was into ashes and those who survived took refuge in stronghold like buildings, for instance old castles or bunkers/blast shelters, that kind of thing. At the start of the movie they live in normal every day London just like 'normal' brits
I suppose. I didn't really realize that the UK got particularly badly "hit" in that film. It did even start out looking quite Victorian though lol And I was fine with it until the Americans came in looking like total pros haha It just felt pretty overdone! Doesn't really matter though I mean... just a movie!
lol,can you imagine how a russian, arab, mexican or german must feel about their image in american movies.
On that note... I love James Bond! Other than Skyfall... I didn't like Skyfall >.< But yeah Casino Royale and GoldenEye totally kick ass! It's true that they paint the UK in better light, but to be fair they're also British movies xD Oh, and I was one of the likes for this! I wish they weren't anonymous!
