Running away when you're a minor is always a risky thing especially if you come straight from an oppressive household because you have been raised your entire life to have expectations about how situations are going to turn out and what you are going to be forbidden from doing... the problem with this is on the street you really can't have any expectations because situations are far less static than when you are dealing with control freak parents. I personally think it was irresponsible to encourage the kid to dip out regardless of how fucked up his parents are and I think it would have still been irresponsible if his parents were abusing him for a few reasons...

what's next? who's there to protect him from further putting himself in dangerous situations? you soaringeagle certainly are not and how much control does he have over his situation? Thats like taking people from prison situations and throwing them in the ghetto expecting them to not fall back into a pattern of crime. I by no means condone subjecting one's self to psychological, emotional or physical violence especially in abusive situations but at the same time I don't condone retreating from war zone by going deeper into the battle. the kid is eventually going home, back to those parents and his situation isn't going to get any better as long as he and his father have this ideological clash and to condone a minor to risk endangering himself and worsening his situation by running away is simply irresponsible and very dangerous in my honest opinion.

In my experience on the road, hitchhiking and running away from home there is a lot less love and light in the streets than you can find within yourself. The rainbow is a skewed dream... soaked in idealism and shot to death by a generation of kids that can't distinguish between their addictions and their necessity for something this system can't offer. The gatherings in the past few years and the rainbow community from 2000 till now are people riding the dystopian wave that mirrors all conceptions of utopia. I hope this kid remains safe and finds what he is looking for but true liberation comes when we liberate ourselves from the mental shackles placed upon us and not from the symbolic gestures of anarchy that come in the form of living on the street, hitchhiking, squatting, etc.

If anything we should have an intention of bringing down babylon and raising the standards of living for our youth, raising the standards of living for the poor as opposed to encouraging people to merely drop out of system that will in turn consume them. I hope this kid is okay and I hope he doesn't run into the shit I ran into when I made similar mistakes.

well said shaman.. i must say,i left home at 15 and if it wasnt for family(rainbow family) id be dead or in prison.. that being said,,it was 1979 when i left home.

ive spent pretty much the last 20 years helpin road dog gutter punk kids,,never runaways ,,at least not when they came here,because as i stated before that can get you in jail quick. but kids from the age of 18 to 25..

the road is not what it was in the early 80's,, sad but true neither is the family..

you take a kid and stick him in with the gutter punks of today and they will eat him alive if he aint very savvy.. and quite frankly i dont see a greenhorn runaway having his head on his shoulders well enough to keep from bein took advantage of by todays gutter punks,crusty kids,..
also i know of no respectful elders in the family stupid enough to involve themselves with a runaway..

if this poor kid by chance was to make it to ocala,,we can only be glad that he has had 3 months to wise up a little before he hits that "peace loving" gathering,,lest he leave battered and beaten without anything he came with...

i for one applaud you on telling it like it is and not portraying it in the fantasy light that soaring eagle does...
