    Ah ah, John Merrik had a very, very rare disease called Proteus Syndrome. Elephantitus is a disease, where the larvae of a worm are injected into someone's body by a mosquito bite. They then commence to block lymph fluid flow, and cause massive tissue swelling. Here's a pic of someone with elephantitus:
